A one-pot route to tunable sugar-derived sulfonated carbon catalysts for sustainable production of biodiesel by fatty acid esterification

Samuel Lalthazuala Rokhuma et al.

Summary: In this study, carbon-based solid acid catalysts with high density active centers were successfully synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal carbonization-sulfonation method at low temperatures. The catalysts demonstrated great significance in the production of biodiesel, allowing efficient conversion of oleic acid with the optimized catalyst and conditions. Furthermore, the catalyst showed potential for recyclability by complete re-sulfonation.

Recent Advances in the Valorization of Biodiesel By-Product Glycerol to Solketal

Supongsenla Ao et al.

Summary: The rapid growth of biodiesel production has led to an abundance of glycerol as a by-product, necessitating its valorization for the long-term sustainability of the industry. Solketal, a glycerol by-product, has emerged as a potential fuel additive in the biodiesel industry. Several heterogeneous acid-catalysts, particularly biomass-based catalysts, have shown promise for solketal production due to their biodegradability, eco-friendliness, and availability. Additionally, magnetic nanoparticles-derived catalysts, sulfonated functionalized catalysts, zeolites, resins, enzymes, and others have demonstrated efficiency in solketal production. This review discusses recent advances in catalysts, including their preparation, various reaction parameters, application, and efficiency in the biodiesel industry. The study highlights incredible prospects for using renewable energy sources, benefiting the industry, environment, and economy.

Solketal synthesis from ketalization of glycerol with acetone: A kinetic study over a sulfated zirconia catalyst

Julian A. Vannucci et al.

Summary: A series of acid catalysts were synthesized from a commercial zirconium oxide sulfated with a 0.5 M H2SO4 solution by wet impregnation. The sulfated zirconia calcined in air at 400 degrees C (Zr-S-400) showed the highest activity and stability for glycerol conversion, with a molar ratio S/Zr = 0.23. The estimated activation energy of the reaction based on a developed kinetic expression was 88.1 +/- 8.9 kJ/mol.

A reusable magnetic nanocatalyst for bio-fuel additives: the ultrasound-assisted synthesis of solketal†

Kalyani Rajkumari et al.

Summary: The efficient ultrasound-assisted room temperature synthesis of solketal using a easily recoverable sulfonic acid-functionalized Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticle catalyst allows for high glycerol conversion and isolated yield. The magnetic retrievability of the catalyst simplifies the synthetic protocol and enables multiple recyclability without loss of catalytic activity, improving the green aspects of the method.
