Summary: In this study, a two-stage fixed bed reactor system was used to co-pyrolyze biomass and waste polystyrene plastic to produce upgraded bio-oils. Different metal impregnated ZSM-5 catalysts were investigated, and they showed varying effects on the yield and composition of the product oils and gases. Deoxygenation of the bio-oils was achieved mainly through different pathways depending on the catalyst used. The addition of metal impregnated catalysts resulted in an increase in the yield of single-ring aromatic compounds in the oil.

Physicochemical Characterization of Cherry Pits-Derived Biochar

Characteristics and evolution of heavy components in bio-oil from the pyrolysis of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin

Summary: The evolution paths of heavy compounds during pyrolysis of biomass components were influenced by temperature, with phenolic-like substances being the most active during secondary reactions. Increasing temperature promoted secondary reactions of phenolic-like species while inhibiting reactions of hemicellulose. Lignin-derived lipids and unsaturated hydrocarbons increased with rising temperature, showing more complex evolution paths compared to cellulose and hemicellulose.

In-situ catalytic upgrading of bio-oil from rapid pyrolysis of biomass over hollow HZSM-5 with mesoporous shell

Summary: The issue of narrow micropores in traditional protonic type Zeolite Socony Mobil-5 (HZSM-5) catalysts, which restrict the diffusion of large-molecular reactants/products, was tackled by preparing hollow HZSM-5 with a mesoporous shell. The efficient catalyst of Hollow(30)-TP showed significantly higher aromatic hydrocarbon yields for cellulose and hemicellulose compared to traditional HZSM-5, and exhibited excellent reusability and regeneration due to increased accessibility to acid sites.

Stabilization of acid-rich bio-oil by catalytic mild hydrotreating

Summary: In this study, Ru-added transition metal catalysts were used for the mild hydrotreating of acid-rich biomass pyrolysis oil, leading to stabilization of the oil, reduction in acidity, and higher organic compound yields. Bimetallic catalysts showed good decarboxylation activity for the removal of carboxylic acids and were deemed suitable for feedstocks requiring suppression of organic reactant loss. The improved catalytic activity of Ru-added transition metals can be attributed to their high acid site densities and enhanced hydrogenation activities.

Highly efficient catalytic pyrolysis of biomass vapors upgraded into jet fuel range hydrocarbon-rich bio-oil over a bimetallic Pt-Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalyst

Summary: Catalytic pyrolysis is an effective method for converting biomass into value-added chemicals, but developing cost-effective catalysts remains a challenge. A highly efficient bimetallic Pt-Ni catalyst was fabricated for upgrading biomass into hydrocarbon-rich bio-oil. The addition of Pt improved the interaction between NiO and alumina, enhancing nickel dispersion and promoting C=O hydrogenation. The Pt-Ni/Al = 1:2 catalyst showed excellent catalytic performance, achieving highest peak areas of desired hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons.
