Densification of waste biomass for manufacturing solid biofuel pellets: a review

Tumpa R. Sarker et al.

Summary: The demand for bioenergy is increasing, and biomass densification offers a sustainable solution to replace coal, reduce carbon emissions, and add value to organic waste. The quality of fuel pellets is influenced by various factors, including biomass type, pretreatments, formulations, densification methods, and conditions.

Integration of First- and Second-generation Bioethanol Production from Beet molasses and Distillery Stillage After Dilute Sulfuric Acid Pretreatment

D. Mikulski et al.

Summary: The combination of waste distillery stillage and sugar-rich beet molasses for ethanol production showed promising results in increasing ethanol concentration and yield. However, attempts to use cellulases for hydrolysis to increase fermentable sugars were unsuccessful, leading to increased concentrations of ethyl acetate and other volatile by-products in the fermentation media. Further optimization of the cellulose enzymatic hydrolysis process is needed for efficient use of the raw material.

Pelletization of torrefied canola residue: Effects of microwave power, residence time and bio-additives on fuel pellet quality

Tumpa R. Sarker et al.

Summary: This study uses a sequential torrefaction and pelletization process to produce high-quality fuel pellets from canola residue. The use of bio-additives further improves the properties of the pellets. The study finds that torrefaction significantly enhances the energy content and hydrophobicity of the pellets.

Prediction of higher heating value (HHV) based on the structural composition for biomass

Yury Maksimuk et al.

Summary: Experimental determination of HHV, as well as various carbon, hydrogen, sulphur, nitrogen, chlorine, ash, lignin and extractives contents in different samples, was conducted. Recommendations for HHV of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and extractives for different types of biomass were made. Through analysis, two equations were proposed for predicting biomass HHV based on lignin and carbon contents with an error no worse than 2.7%.
