A state-of-the-art review on spent coffee ground (SCG) pyrolysis for future biorefinery

A. E. Atabani et al.

Summary: Coffee waste, known as spent coffee grounds (SCG), has been a focus of research for its potential as a valuable resource in the circular bioeconomy. By integrating SCG with biorefinery and pyrolysis processes, energy and high-value products can be produced, contributing to solid waste management and environmental protection. Studies have shown that SCG can be correlated with renewable energy sources, biofuels, and bio-oils, with pyrolysis as a promising approach for valorization. Further exploration of pyrolysis of defatted spent coffee grounds (DSCG) may provide additional insights for economically valorizing SCG through biorefinery processes.

Hydrogen-Rich Syngas and Biochar Production by Non-Catalytic Valorization of Date Palm Seeds

Hani Hussain Sait et al.

Summary: The influence of pyrolysis temperature on the physicochemical parameters of date seed biochar and hydrogen-rich syngas was investigated. The carbon concentration in the biochar and the composition of syngas were found to increase with increasing temperature. The activation energies of pyrolysis were determined using different models and ranged from 25-75 kJ/mol.

Synthesis and characterization of biomass-derived surface-modified activated carbon for enhanced CO2 adsorption

Azeem Sarwar et al.

Summary: In this study, activated carbon based adsorbents were synthesized from hydro-char through modified hydrothermal carbonization and thermochemical activation methods, exhibiting high specific surface area and microporous volume with notable CO2 adsorption capacity. The experimental data fit various adsorption isotherm models, and the adsorption of CO2 was found to be spontaneous and exothermic on the adsorbent.

A comparative assessment of solid fuel pellets production from torrefied agro-residues and their blends

Rifat Mehdi et al.

Summary: The densification of biomass through pelletizing and torrefaction can significantly increase the carbon content and energy value of the pellets. Blending with cotton waste results in even higher carbon content, and the process of blending and torrefaction shows a synergistic effect in producing carbon-rich solid biofuel. Experimentally, it was observed that blending and torrefaction significantly increased the carbon content and energy value of the pellets.
