The Effect of Sodium Bentonite in the Thermo-Catalytic Reduction of Viscosity of Heavy Oils

Zhichao Zhou et al.

Summary: In this paper, a series of bentonite-supported catechol-metal complexes were prepared and their catalytic viscosity reduction performance in the aquathermolysis of heavy oil was investigated. The viscosity can be reduced by 73%, and the pour point can be lowered by 15.0 degrees C at most, showing the synergistic catalysis of the ex situ catalyst and in situ clay in this aquathermolytic reaction.

Chemical Additives as Flow Improvers for Waxy Crude Oil and Model Oil: A Critical Review Analyzing Structure-Efficacy Relationships

Farah Ansari et al.

Summary: Waxy crude oil, as an unconventional alternative to conventional oil, presents challenges in flow assurance due to its high viscosity and gelation properties. Chemical additives such as polymers, polymer nanocomposites, surfactants, and organic solvents have been utilized to improve flow during transportation. The relationship between the structural properties of these additives and their efficacy in flow improvement has been explored and discussed in this review. The perspective of structure-efficacy relationship will aid in designing novel additives for waxy crude oil with greater effectiveness and suitability.

Modification effect of macroporous comb-like polymeric pour point depressants on the flow behavior of model waxy oils

Xue Xia et al.

Summary: By preparing MP-POA monoliths with different cross-linking degrees, the influence of MP-POA on the rheology of model waxy oil was studied. The results showed that the crystallinity of MP-POA deteriorated with increasing cross-linking degree, while its rheological improving effect first enhanced and then reduced.

A non-isothermal approach to evaluate the impact of the cooling stage on the startup flow of waxy crude oils

Vitor Figueiroa Ventura et al.

Summary: Waxy crude oils can turn into a gel at low temperatures, causing flow assurance issues during restart due to the higher pressure drop required. This study investigates the impact of cooling process after shutdown on the problem. The results show that the plastic number and the duration of cooling after shutdown play a role in the restart conditions, with higher plastic numbers and longer cooling times leading to more difficult restarts.

Synthesis of aluminium alkylbenzene sulfonate and its behavior as a flow improver for crude oil

Zhichao Zhou et al.

Summary: Low-molecular flow improvers are essential chemical agents in crude oil production. This study synthesized and evaluated three alkyl benzene sulfonates as flow improvers for crude oil. The results indicate that aluminum dodecylbenzene sulfonate has the best performance in reducing viscosity and lowering the freezing point of crude oil. Microphotographs confirm the improvement in crude oil flow after adding the flow improvers, while infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry analysis reveal the interaction mechanism between the flow improvers and crude oil components.

Electrorheological behaviors of waxy crude oil gel

Qian Huang et al.

Summary: It has been found in this study that applying an electric field to waxy crude oil gel can significantly weaken its structure, including reducing yield stress, moduli, and viscosity, and can transition from brittle-like to ductile-like fracture. A stronger structure weakening effect can be obtained at a higher field strength and lower temperature, and the effect induced by the electric field can be maintained for a certain period of time after removal.
