Restructuring effects of the chemical environment in metal nanocatalysis and single-atom catalysis

Laurent Piccolo

Summary: Metal-based heterogeneous catalysts are typically composed of supported nanoparticles a few nanometers in size, balancing active surface area with structural stability. These catalysts constantly evolve under reaction conditions, experiencing phenomena such as morphological changes, compound formation, segregation, leaching, and other interaction effects with the support material. Single-atom catalysts, particularly sensitive to their chemical environment, have also emerged as a new area of study in catalysis research.

Shape and Surface Morphology of Copper Nanoparticles under CO2 Hydrogenation Conditions from First Principles

Andreas Muller et al.

Summary: The study predicted the surface status of unsupported Cu nanoparticles under CO2 hydrogenation conditions using density functional theory calculations, revealing that Cu surfaces are fully reduced and free of adsorbed oxygen under typical reaction conditions. The Cu(111) facet is partially covered with hydrogen and the Cu(110) facet is partially covered with adsorbed CO at high RWGS conversions, while the Cu(100) and Cu(211) facet remain adsorbate-free. Overall, the particle shape of Cu NPs is dominated by the (111) facet with a small area of the (100) facet present.

Density functional and microkinetic study of CO2 hydrogenation to methanol on subnanometer Pd cluster doped by transition metal (M = Cu, Ni, Pt, Rh)

Adhitya Gandaryus Saputro et al.

Summary: Through density functional theory and microkinetic calculations, it is found that doping transition metals can decrease the activation energy of CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, leading to an improved catalyst activity, especially in Pd6Ni clusters. Pd6M clusters show a preference towards the formate pathway over the RWGS + CO hydrogenation pathway.

Construction of Cr-embedded graphyne electrocatalyst for highly selective reduction of CO2 to CH4: A DFT study

Ling Fu et al.

Summary: This study explores the electrocatalytic potential of different transition metals in the CO2 reduction reaction, and finds that embedding Cr into graphyne is the most efficient option for producing CH4. Additionally, it is discovered that CO2 is more advantageous for the hydrogen evolution reaction to preferentially occupy the activation site than H2 on Cr-graphyne. These results provide a new path for the development of low-potential electrocatalysts with high activity and selectivity for CO2 reduction.
