Visual Fire Power: An Algorithm for Measuring Heat Release Rate of Visible Flames in Camera Footage, with Applications in Facade Fire Experiments

Matthew Bonner et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel algorithm, Visual Fire Power, which utilizes video footage captured by two cameras to measure the heat release rate of a turbulent flame. By measuring the time-averaged volume of the fire, this algorithm provides an alternative method for measuring heat release rate and comparing flame performances in different scenarios.

An experimental study and mathematical quantification of buoyant turbulent flame morphology under the coupling effects of inclined surfaces and crossflows

Yubo Bi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flame morphology of buoyant turbulent propane flames under the coupling effects of inclined surfaces and horizontal crossflows. The results show that the inclined surface and crossflow have different effects on the flame morphology parameters, such as the tilt angle, length, height, and attachment length. The crossflow has a significant impact on the flame tilt angle, length, and attachment length, while the inclined surface has a synergistic effect with the crossflow on the flame height and attachment length.

Study on the combustion, entrainment, and plume flow behaviors of annular pool fires

Ping Huang et al.

Summary: The effects of D-in/D-out on the flame morphology and plume entrainment mechanisms of annular pool fires were studied through numerical simulation. Increasing D-in/D-out leads to an increase in the area with low combustion intensity near the central axis of the pool surface. The combustion of annular pool fires is dominated by non-premixed diffusion flame. The study also reveals the flame merging mechanism and verifies the applicability of scaled simulation conclusions to guide full-scale fires.

Reduced Pressure Effect On The Flame Length Of Elevated N-Heptane Fires In An Aircraft Cargo Compartment

Jie Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of reduced pressure on flame characteristics of elevated n-heptane fires in an aircraft cargo compartment. The results show that as the fire source elevates, the flame height and extension length increase. New flame height and extension length correlations applicable to reduced pressure conditions were proposed by introducing adjusted parameters.

Experimental study of impinging flame structures and thermal characteristics in ceiling flow generated by fuel jet diffusion combustion with air entrainment constraint in a corner

Xu Fang et al.

Summary: This study conducted experimental investigation on impinging flame behavior in ceiling flow generated by fuel jet diffusion combustion in corners of various angles. The results show complex variations in impinging flame behavior with corner angles, and propose new global and normalized formulas to predict impinging flame length, temperature, and heat flux profiles.

Effect of sidewall on the flame extension characteristics beneath a ceiling induced by carriage fire in a channel

Fei Tang et al.

Summary: The laboratory tests investigated flame ejections in a reduced scale channel with the carriage at the center. The study analyzed how variations in ventilation factor affected critical heat release rates and proposed correlations for flame extension lengths and areas. Further experiments studied the effect of sidewall constraint on flame extension, finding that decreasing the sidewall-to-opening distance increased longitudinal flame extension length but decreased transverse flame extension length. New correlations were proposed to account for this effect, demonstrating potential for fire safety engineering applications.

Experimental analysis on burning rate and temperature profile produced by pool fire in a curved tunnel as a function of fire location

Rongliang Pan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of a curved ceiling and fire location on combustion characteristics in a utility tunnel by analyzing burning rate and temperature profile produced by a pool fire beneath a curved ceiling. Results showed that oxygen supply and heat feedback compete to determine the evolution of the burning rate. A qualitative analysis was conducted to elucidate this competitive mechanism.
