Loss of glutamatergic signalling from MCH neurons reduced anxiety-like behaviours in novel environments

Summary: Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) neurons in the hypothalamus are heterogeneous and can express other neuropeptides and transmitters. MCH neurons can release glutamate to directly innervate downstream neurons, potentially affecting glucose homeostasis, nutrient-sensing, energy balance, and mood disorders. By deleting the expression of vesicular glutamate transporter 2 (Vglut2) specifically in MCH neurons, researchers found that Mch-Vglut2-KO mice displayed anxiety-like behaviors and reduced exploratory activity, suggesting that glutamatergic signaling from MCH neurons, similar to MCH peptide, contributes to anxiety regulation and promotion.

Neuroendocrine Control of Reproduction in Teleost Fish: Concepts and Controversies

Summary: During the evolution of fish, the direct innervation mode of hypothalamo-pituitary communication developed, but the median eminence typical of mammals was lost. Various neuropeptides, amines, and neurotransmitters are involved in the control of reproduction. Positive and negative sex steroid feedback loops exist in both sexes. Gene mutation models in zebrafish and medaka challenge the existing understanding of neuropeptidergic control. New reproductive neuropeptides, such as nesfatin 1, neurokinin B, and the secretoneurins, are being discovered. A generalized model for the neuroendocrine control of reproduction is proposed, with the aim of explaining the evolution of neuroendocrine control and discovering new hormones with novel applications.
