Comparative Study of Elabela and Apelin on Apelin Receptor Activation Through β-Arrestin Recruitment

Hong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the different effects of ELA and apelin on the interaction between APJ and ARRBs using NanoBiT(R) technology. The results showed that both ELA and apelin promoted the interaction of APJ and ARRBs in a concentration-dependent manner, but ELA was less effective than apelin in inducing this interaction.

The Apelinergic System in Pregnancy

Oceane Pecheux et al.

Summary: The apelinergic system is a highly conserved pleiotropic system that plays important roles in pregnancy and placenta-related complications. It is involved in the regulation of the adipoinsular axis, cardiovascular and central nervous systems, carcinogenesis, and embryo cardiogenesis and vasculogenesis during pregnancy. However, there are inconsistencies in the expression and circulating levels of its components in human placenta-associated preeclampsia.

The evaluation of serum apelin levels in patients complicated with preeclampsia

Muzaffer Temur et al.

Summary: This study investigated the serum levels of apelin in mild, severe preeclamptic pregnant women and normotensive pregnant women, and found that the serum apelin levels were significantly lower in the preeclampsia group. There was a strong inverse correlation between serum apelin levels and systolic blood pressure. Further research is needed to understand the role of apelin and the apelinergic system in preeclampsia.

Apelin, APJ, and ELABELA: Role in Placental Function, Pregnancy, and Foetal Development-An Overview

Monika Dawid et al.

Summary: The apelinergic system, including the apelin receptor (APJ) and its specific ligands, plays an important role in regulating placental physiology and pregnancy. Imbalances in placental processes may lead to specific pregnancy pathologies, highlighting the need to find substances for early diagnosis or treatment.

Structure-Activity Relationship and Bioactivity of Short Analogues of ELABELA as Agonists of the Apelin Receptor

Kien Tran et al.

Summary: ELABELA (ELA) is the second endogenous ligand of the apelin receptor (APJ). The shortest bioactive C-terminal fragment ELA23-32, with high affinity for APJ, produces cardiorenal effects similar to those of ELA in vivo. Studies suggest that ELA and apelin-13 may interact differently with APJ, and aromatic residues at the Phe31 or Pro32 position are important for receptor activation.

Anti-Apoptotic Effect of Apelin in Human Placenta: Studies on BeWo Cells and Villous Explants from Third-Trimester Human Pregnancy

Ewa Mlyczynska et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the antiapoptotic effect of apelin on trophoblast cells by regulating the expression of pro-survival and proapoptotic factors, as well as attenuating oxidative stress. This effect was mediated by the APJ receptor and specific signaling pathways like mitogen-activated protein kinase (ERK1/2/MAP3/1) and protein kinase B (AKT), suggesting the potential role of apelin in placental development.

Association of glutamate cystein ligase (GCL) activity Peroxiredoxin 4 (prxR4) and apelin levels in women with preeclampsia

Sahar Mazloomi et al.

Summary: This study found that the GCL enzyme activity and Prx4 level were significantly lower in women with preeclampsia, as well as reductions in the concentrations of glutathione and apelin. Diet control and stress reduction may be one way to prevent and reduce the risks of preeclampsia in high-risk women.

Ameliorative effect of apelin-13 against renal complications in L-NAME-induced preeclampsia in rats

Reham Z. Hamza et al.

Summary: Pre-eclampsia accompanying acute liver and kidney injury is a major cause of increased fetal and maternal mortality and morbidity. Apelin can improve endothelial dysfunction, reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, and has a positive impact on renal dysfunction and proteinuria associated with pre-eclampsia.
