Identifying Forest Structural Types along an Aridity Gradient in Peninsular Spain: Integrating Low-Density LiDAR, Forest Inventory, and Aridity Index

Julian Tijerin-Trivino et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the ability of combined forest inventory data and low-density airborne LiDAR data to discriminate main forest structural types in the Mediterranean-temperate transition ecotone. By using k-medoids algorithm and Random Forest model, four clusters of forest structures were identified and a method for continuous monitoring of forest structures was provided.

From comprehensive field inventories to remotely sensed wall-to-wall stand attribute data - a brief history of management inventories in the Nordic countries

M. Maltamo et al.

Summary: Forest management inventories provide critical information for forest management planning at the stand level. The use of wall-to-wall remote-sensing data has enabled a paradigm shift from subjective visual assessments to model-based inferences. While advances in optical and Lidar-based sensors have improved accuracy in forest attribute estimation, challenges remain in obtaining species-specific stand attribute information and assessing tree quality in mixed stands.

Summary: This study assessed the absolute and relative accuracies of leaf-on and leaf-off SPL data acquired at different altitudes, and compared them with LML data, finding that the leaf-off SPL data were most accurate overall.

Prediction error aggregation behaviour for remote sensing augmented forest inventory approaches

Eetu Kotivuori et al.

Summary: This study compares the behavior of prediction errors in forest inventory using multispectral Airborne Laser Scanning and airborne imagery. By aggregating subplot data, it was found that EABA showed the lowest mean of root mean square error values for total stem volume.Efficient results were obtained at quartet aggregation level, with ABA and EABA performing similarly while ITD had lower performance.
