Soil fungal diversity of birch plantations on former agricultural land resembles naturally regenerated birch stands on agricultural and forest land

Reimo Lutter et al.

Summary: Short-rotation forestry on former agricultural soils is a new silvicultural system for producing woody biomass and mitigating climate change. This study compared the soil fungal diversity and composition of silver birch plantations, naturally regenerated birch stands, and native forest birch stands in Estonia. The results showed that the fungal community composition differed between the plantation and natural regeneration stands, as well as the native forest stands. Soil fungal richness and composition were influenced by factors such as historical surrounding forest cover, stand age, stand distance from native forest, and soil Mg content.

Multiple drivers of large-scale lichen decline in boreal forest canopies

Per-Anders Esseen et al.

Summary: Research has shown that certain lichen species in managed forests in Sweden have declined over the past 10 years, primarily due to environmental factors such as temperature, rain, nitrogen deposition, and stand age, with Alectoria and Usnea showing stronger declines in the southern regions. However, in some areas, the length of Bryoria and Usnea has increased. Industrial forestry in conjunction with nitrogen is identified as the main driver of lichen decline.

Soil spore bank communities of ectomycorrhizal fungi in Pseudotsuga japonica forests and neighboring plantations

Keita Henry Okada et al.

Summary: This study investigated the EcM fungal spore bank communities in soil in remnant patches of Japanese Douglas-fir forest. The results showed that these spore banks were not restricted to Douglas-fir forests and extended to surrounding forest dominated by arbuscular mycorrhizal trees. The community structure of EcM fungal spore banks differed significantly between study sites but not between forest types.

Soil fungal communities in young Norway spruce-dominant stands: footprints of former land use and selective thinning

Darta Klavina et al.

Summary: Forestry practices such as afforestation and early forest thinning have an impact on the diversity and resilience of soil fungal communities. The study found that differences in fungal community composition were primarily influenced by soil pH and sampling site, while former land use and management practices significantly affected specific genera of ectomycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungi.

Long-term effects of forest fires on fungal community and soil properties along a hemiboreal Scots pine forest fire chronosequence

Argo Orumaa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term effects of forest fires on the dynamics of soil fungal community in hemiboreal Scots pine stands. The results showed significant effects of fires on soil and fungi, with soil saprotrophs and ectomycorrhizal fungi dominating the fungal communities. Fire had a significant impact on fungal species richness and composition, and soil pH also played a role in determining fungal species composition.

Changes in Chemical Properties and Fungal Communities of Mineral Soil after Clear-Cutting and Reforestation of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) Sites

Aiste Povilaitiene et al.

Summary: This study assessed the changes in chemical properties and fungal communities in the upper mineral soil layer in managed Scots pine ecosystems in Lithuania. The results showed variations in soil chemical parameters among different sites, and the dominant fungi were mycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungi.

Increasing the amount of dead wood by creation of high stumps has limited value for lichen diversity

Aino Hamalainen et al.

Summary: The artificial creation of dead wood in managed forests has limited conservation value for epixylic lichens, and does not provide a sufficient substitute for naturally occurring dead wood in mature forests. Stump age influences species richness, while the impact of landscape composition is minor at scales below 2.5 km.

The factors and scales shaping fungal assemblages in fallen spruce trunks: A DNA metabarcoding study

Kadri Runnel et al.

Summary: Understanding the distribution of biodiversity in forest landscapes is key for conservation management planning. This study used DNA metabarcoding to assess wood-inhabiting fungi in high-productivity forests, finding that older stands had higher fungal diversity and emphasizing the importance of dead wood volume and landscape habitat connectivity for fungal diversity.

Sergei Polme et al.

Summary: The article introduces a database FungalTraits to facilitate functional assignments and ecological interpretation of fungi, discussing the challenges between molecular identification of fungal diversity and knowledge of functional traits. Through the involvement of expert knowledge and tools, researchers reannotated a large number of fungal and Stramenopila genera, summarizing them into 17 lifestyle-related traits suitable for environmental studies.
