Machine Learning Forest Simulator (MLFS): R package for data-driven assessment of the future state of forests

Jernej Jevsenak et al.

Summary: The Machine Learning Forest Simulator (MLFS) is a completely data-driven model of forest dynamics organized as an R package. It is a single-tree, user-friendly tool that can be used in all forest ecosystems. This article describes the newly developed model system and provides detailed instructions on how to use it. The MLFS showed reasonable accuracy and has the potential to become a standard tool for decision-making in forest ecosystem management.

Variable selection for estimating individual tree height using genetic algorithm and random forest

Evandro Nunes Miranda et al.

Summary: A hybrid method combining genetic algorithms for variables selection and random forest for fitting models of individual tree heights was proposed and compared with other methods using a dataset of 5,608 trees and 189 environmental variables. The optimal set of variables included breast height diameter ratio, competition index, dominant height, soil silt, and boron content, with the proposed hybrid method achieving comparable accuracy in estimating tree heights. The study suggests that this modelling approach could have broader applications in forestry and ecological science.

Climate Change Effects on Height-Diameter Allometric Relationship Vary with Tree Species and Size for Larch Plantations in Northern and Northeastern China

Qigang Xu et al.

Summary: The height-diameter relationship of trees is crucial for forest investigation and estimating carbon storage. This study examined how climate change affects this relationship in larch plantations in northern and northeastern China. By analyzing measurement data from national forest inventories, climate-sensitive height-diameter models were developed and used to assess the relationship under different climate change scenarios. The results showed that climate change had varying effects on different tree species and sizes, with larger trees being more sensitive to climate change.

Height-to-diameter ratios with temporal and dendro/morphometric variables for Brazilian pine in south Brazil

Andre Felipe Hess et al.

Summary: This study developed a regression technique of generalized linear models for analyzing the height-to-diameter ratios of dominant and co-dominant trees of Araucaria angustifolia. The results indicate that the HD ratio decreases with increasing age, crown area and basal area, and increases with stand density and annual diameter increment.

A random forest model for basal area increment predictions from national forest inventory data

Jernej Jevsenak et al.

Summary: The study utilized a machine learning model to predict and interpret tree basal area increment, trained and evaluated on data from the Slovenian NFI, showcasing different growth traits and competition potentials of various tree species. The results highlighted the importance of basal area and competition status as key predictor variables, with site-specific conditions playing a crucial role in tree growth.

Variation in height-diameter allometry of ponderosa pine along competition, climate, and species diversity gradients in the western United States

Hanqing Qiu et al.

Summary: Through studying the height-diameter allometry of ponderosa pine, it was found that the variation in allometry across different environmental gradients was more strongly influenced by neighborhood competition, rather than climate. The large-scale variation in the height-diameter allometry of ponderosa pine was mainly explained by neighboring competition and partly by climate, diversity, or topography.

Developing distance-dependent growth models from irregularly measured sample plot data - A case for Larix olgensis in Northeast China

Lihu Dong et al.

Summary: This study developed a methodology to build distance-dependent models from irregularly sampled data, applied in Larix olgensis plantations in northeastern China. The distance-dependent models did not provide better estimates compared to distance-independent models, but are still useful for model-based spatial analysis.

Tree mortality in western US forests forecasted using forest inventory and Random Forest classification

Brandon E. McNellis et al.

Summary: Climate change is projected to have a significant impact on forest vulnerability to wildfires, insects, disease, and droughts in the western United States. Species identity was found to be the most important predictor of mortality, with contributions from climate and soil variables. The study suggests that future predictions of widespread forest mortality should focus on vulnerable species and that significant mortality events in certain species may not have a large impact on all systems.

Summary: This study successfully mapped forest canopy height by integrating different satellite data and investigated the impact of incorporating canopy height information into AGB models on prediction accuracy. The results demonstrated that incorporating canopy height information significantly improved the accuracy of AGB predictions.
