Vitamin A deficiency during the perinatal period induces changes in vitamin A metabolism in the offspring. The regulation of intestinal vitamin A metabolism via ISX occurs only in male rats severely vitamin A-deficient

Patrick Borel et al.

Summary: Perinatal deficiency of vitamin A affects the metabolism of this vitamin in the offspring, particularly in males severely deficient in this vitamin. Additionally, severe vitamin A deficiency impairs the bioavailability of beta-carotene and vitamins D and E.

Determinants of good vitamin A consumption in the 12 East Africa Countries using recent Demographic and health survey

Maereg Wolde et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the magnitude and determinants of good vitamin A consumption in twelve East African countries. The pooled magnitude of good vitamin A consumption was found to be 62.91%, with the highest proportion in Burundi (80.84%) and the lowest in Kenya (34.12%). The study identified several factors associated with good vitamin A consumption, including women's age, marital status, maternal education, wealth index, maternal occupation, children's age, media exposure, literacy rate, and parity.

The Potential Impact of Climate Change on the Micronutrient-Rich Food Supply

Richard D. Semba et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the potential effects of climate change on agricultural yield and micronutrient quality of plant foods, as well as the availability of animal foods. The study suggests that climate change is likely to affect the availability of micronutrient-rich foods, rather than their nutrient content. Mitigating and adaptive strategies should be considered to reduce the risk of micronutrient deficiencies in vulnerable populations.

Using black soldier fly larvae reared on fruits and vegetables waste as a sustainable dietary source of provitamin a carotenoids

Patrick Borel et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that black soldier fly larvae reared on fruits and vegetables rich in provitamin A carotenoids can potentially provide more vitamin A than the fruits and vegetables themselves. Incorporating these larvae into feed could meet the vitamin A needs of production animals. Therefore, rearing black soldier fly larvae on by-products or waste rich in provitamin A carotenoids may be a sustainable strategy to combat vitamin A deficiency.

β-Carotene Bioavailability and Conversion Efficiency Are Significantly Affected by Sex in Rats First Observation Suggesting a Possible Hormetic Regulation of Vitamin A Metabolism in Female Rats

Patrick Borel et al.

Summary: The study found lower plasma retinol concentrations and higher hepatic free retinol concentrations in female rats. Beta-carotene bioavailability and conversion efficiency to VA are influenced by sex, with female rats showing higher bioavailability but lower conversion efficiency. Most gene expressions exhibit a U-shaped dose response curve depending on VA intake.
