Free tocopherols and tocotrienols in 82 plant species? oil: Chemotaxonomic relation as demonstrated by PCA and HCA

Aleksander Siger et al.

Summary: The tocopherol and tocotrienol profiles were studied in 418 plant oil samples, representing 31 families, 82 species, and 5 cross-species. Tocotrienols dominated in 15 species, while tocopherols dominated in 67 species. Gamma-T accounted for almost half (49.3%) of the total tocochromanol content, while alpha-T constituted one quarter (25.0%), and other tocochromanols were minor constituents. The presence of characteristic tocochromanol profiles in oils was related to the taxonomic plant origin. This study also demonstrated that both monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous families can be rich in tocotrienols. The usefulness of statistical tools such as PCA and HCA for differentiating plant samples based on their tocochromanol profile was shown.

Tocopherols as antioxidants in lipid-based systems: The combination of chemical and physicochemical interactions determines their efficiency

Nathalie Barouh et al.

Summary: Lipid oxidation is a major concern in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical sectors, and different antioxidant additives are used to prevent or slow down this process. Tocopherols, specifically natural extracts or pure synthetic molecules, are widely used as antioxidants, but research on their efficiency has yielded contradictory results. In addition to chemical reactivity, the physical properties and interactions with other compounds play a crucial role in determining the efficacy of antioxidants like tocopherols.

In search of sustainable alternatives for vegetable oils deacidification using oligomeric ionic liquid approach

Marcela C. Ferreira et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of protic FA-based IL as a solvent for deacidification of vegetable oils. The experimental results show that IL has good deacidification efficiency, and the model can well describe the liquid-liquid equilibrium of the system. Therefore, protic FA-based ILs may have potential applicability as alternative solvents for deacidification of crude vegetable oils.

Milk sphingosomes as lipid carriers for tocopherols in aqueous foods: Thermotropic phase behaviour and morphology

Christelle Lopez et al.

Summary: This study aimed to design food-grade hydrocolloidal encapsulation systems capable of loading lipophilic antioxidant molecules to prevent oxidation in food. The interactions between milk sphingomyelin (milk-SM) bilayers and alpha-tocopherol molecules were investigated using various biophysical techniques, and it was found that alpha-tocopherol molecules can insert into milk-SM bilayers and induce changes in their structure and properties. These findings have important implications for the development of novel encapsulation materials for preventing food oxidation.

Vapor-liquid equilibria of α-tocopherol in transportation fuels surrogates: An experimental and modeling study

Halla Kerkache et al.

Summary: This study investigates the synergy between alpha-tocopherol and surrogate automotive fuels as well as the volatility of the resulting ternary blends. The addition of alpha-tocopherol was found to alter the distillation curve, shifting a large fraction of the distillate volumes to higher temperatures. This research provides a potential multifunctional additive for improving fuel distillation curves.

Solid-liquid equilibrium of free form of oil contaminants (3-MCPD and glycidol) in lipidic systems

Sabrina S. Andrade et al.

Summary: This study investigated the solid-liquid equilibrium of fatty acids, triacylglycerols, and partial acylglycerols with 3-MCPD and glycidol. The results showed that the lipid compounds formed liquid crystalline structures and/or solid solutions with the contaminants, making it difficult to separate them from the lipid matrix and potentially affecting their absorption during digestion.

Assessment of COSMO-SAC Predictions for Solid-Liquid Equilibrium in Binary Eutectic Systems

Daili Peng et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs), as green and sustainable solvents, have gained significant attention in various fields. This study evaluated the predictions of the conductor-like screening model for segment activity coefficient (COSMO-SAC) for the solid-liquid equilibrium (SLE) of different eutectic systems. The results showed that the COSMO-SAC model provided satisfactory predictions for most nonsalt eutectic systems, but unsatisfactory predictions for salt-based eutectic systems, which could be due to both model limitations and the lack of reliable melting properties for thermally unstable salts.
