Phased polyploid genomes provide deeper insight into the multiple origins of domesticated Saccharomyces cerevisiae beer yeasts

Omar Abou Saada et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the polyploid genomes of beer yeasts and revealed their evolutionary history. The results showed that different beer subpopulations originated from different population admixtures and had distinctive genomic patterns. Among them, the genes related to carbon metabolism, oxidoreduction, and cell wall organization, which are relevant to the brewing environment, showed the highest diversity. Furthermore, independent domestication, evolution, and adaptation events were highlighted across subpopulations.

Domestication reprogrammed the budding yeast life cycle

Matteo De Chiara et al.

Summary: This study assesses the impact of domestication on the evolution of budding yeast and reveals significant differences between domesticated and wild strains in terms of reproductive capacity, tolerance, and life span. Domestication systematically enhances fermentative growth and reduces respiratory growth, alters tolerance to various stresses, and abolishes or impairs the sexual life cycle. The genetic origins of the yeast domestication syndrome were traced using genome-wide association analysis and genetic engineering, involving aneuploidy, gene presence/absence variations, copy number variations, and single-nucleotide polymorphisms.

Interactive Tree Of Life (iTOL) v5: an online tool for phylogenetic tree display and annotation

Ivica Letunic et al.

Summary: The Interactive Tree Of Life is an online tool for displaying, manipulating, and annotating phylogenetic and other trees. The latest version 5 introduces a new tree display engine and several new features, such as a new dataset type and expanded annotation options. Users can now also manually annotate trees by hand, providing more flexibility and control.

Presence of Saccharomyces cerevisiae subsp. diastaticus in industry and nature and spoilage capacity of its vegetative cells and ascospores

Inge M. Suiker et al.

Summary: The study found that S. diastaticus is a less prevalent variant of S. cerevisiae in nature, but accumulates in breweries in mixed biofilms. Additionally, it was shown that both vegetative cells and spores can spoil all tested beer products, regardless of their environmental history.
