Molecular identification of critically endangered European eels (Anguilla anguilla) in US retail outlets

Taylor Ely et al.

Summary: The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is critically endangered, but illegal sales still exist in many countries. Monitoring efforts have focused on Asian markets, while studies on the US market are limited. In this study, 7 out of 137 eel samples purchased from various locations in the US were identified as European eels using molecular analysis. However, the frequency of European eels in the US market is lower compared to other non-European countries.

Demographics and exploitation of two Near Threatened freshwater eels, Anguilla bengalensis and Anguilla bicolor, in small-scale subsistence fisheries and implications for conservation

Ashna Shanmughan et al.

Summary: Tropical freshwater eels, specifically Anguilla bengalensis and Anguilla bicolor, are facing declines in availability and increasing exploitation rates, jeopardizing their populations. This study in the Western Ghats hotspot of southern India provides important data on the demographics and exploitation levels of these eels, highlighting the unsustainability of current exploitation rates. The study emphasizes the need for an integrated conservation approach to ensure a sustainable future for these eel species.

Flying under the radar: DNA barcoding ray wings in Greece detects protected species and umbrella labelling terms

Zoe Giagkazoglou et al.

Summary: Despite labeling regulations at local, European and International levels, mislabeling of seafood products and marketing of protected species remain global issues. DNA barcoding is an effective method for detecting fraudulent seafood products. A study in Greece found moderate levels of mislabeling in ray products, with some samples belonging to species with prohibitions on landings and threatened categories of the IUCN Red List.

Development Status and Trends in the Eel Farming Industry in Asia

Yuan Yuan et al.

Summary: Global eel production has significantly increased in the past 30 years due to the expansion of eel farming, with China and Japan being the main players in eel culture and consumption. The industry is characterized by high investment, high risk, and high returns, with China leading in global eel yield and Japan dominating the consumer market.

Meta-analyses of molecular seafood studies identify the global distribution of legal and illegal trade in CITES-regulated European eels

Vincent Nijman et al.

Summary: The authentication of seafood products using molecular techniques is important for food sustainability, food security, and international trade regulation. A study focusing on the molecular detection of European eel found evidence of a global, potentially illegal, trade in European eel, with incomplete or fraudulent labeling. This raises concerns about compliance with trade regulations and its implications for food safety and sustainability.

Economic development in times of population decline-a century of European eel fishing on the Swedish west coast

A. K. Magnusson et al.

Summary: The European eel stock has been declining for decades, but the small-scaled fyke-net fishery for eel on the west coast of Sweden increased contrary to this trend from the early 1900s to the 1990s due to rising demand and eel prices. Weather and technical development had minimal impact on landed volumes.

High incidence of mislabeling and a hint of fraud in the ceviche and sushi business

Ximena Velez-Zuazo et al.

Summary: Seafood fraud is prevalent in Lima, Peru, with 43% of samples collected showing mislabeling or substitution, especially in restaurants where the incidence is significantly higher at 61%. The cost of dishes in cevicherias is inversely associated with the occurrence of mislabeling/substitution.

Chinese eel products in EU markets imply the effectiveness of trade regulations but expose fraudulent labelling

Florian Martin Stein et al.

Summary: The stock of European eel is declining, leading to trade restrictions by EU law and CITES listing. Research found that Chinese exporters sell European eel products in the European market while evading EU law, with fraudulent labeling violating EU regulations.

Geographic Pattern of Sushi Product Misdescription in Italy-A Crosstalk between Citizen Science and DNA Barcoding

Anna Maria Pappalardo et al.

Summary: Food safety agencies are concerned about the safety of sushi and the health of consumers due to the risks associated with consuming raw fish and seafood. Research findings suggest a significant rate of species substitution in sushi products, underscoring the need for international standardization of fish market names.

MEGA11 Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis Version 11

Koichiro Tamura et al.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.
