Microextraction of melamine from dairy products by thymol-nonanoic acid deep eutectic solvent for high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet determination

Andrey Shishov et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the effective liquid-phase microextraction of melamine from dairy products using deep eutectic solvents for the first time. The developed procedure involves precipitation of proteins from milk samples using salt (sodium sulfate) and subsequent extraction of melamine into a hydrophobic eutectic solution phase based on thymol and nonanoic acid. The use of a medium-chain fatty acid and a terpenoid as precursors of the extraction solvent promotes the mass transfer of melamine through strong interactions between carboxyl and amino groups. The optimized procedure allows for the fast, miniaturized, and repeatable determination of melamine in real samples of powdered and whole milk, with a wide range of determined concentrations and low detection limit.

Summary: Hydrophobic magnetic deep eutectic solvents (HMDESs), consisting of a hydrogen bond acceptor, hydrogen bond donor, and a metal halide salt, have been prepared and studied for their physicochemical properties. The viscosity, magnetic susceptibility, and thermal stability of these solvents can be easily tailored by varying the composition and molar ratio. With their structural tunability, HMDESs show great potential for a wide range of applications.

First deep eutectic solvent-based (DES) stationary phase for gas chromatography and future perspectives for DES application in separation techniques

Malwina Momotko et al.

Summary: This paper presents the first application of deep eutectic solvents (DES) as stationary phases for gas chromatography, showing their ability to effectively separate volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The synthesized DES was found to be a stationary phase of medium polarity with high selectivity towards alcohols, and specific interactions with certain analytes. By modifying the properties of DES, such as replacing HBA or HBD or dissolving macromolecular substances, the proposed stationary phase is highly flexible for various applications.
