Preliminary authentication of apple juices using untargeted UHPLC-HRMS analysis combined to chemometrics

Katy Dinis et al.

Summary: In this study, apple juice samples from different farming and production processes were analyzed using UHPLC-HRMS. A workflow was developed for data processing, and chemometric tools were employed to discriminate different types of apple juice. Promising results were obtained in identifying potential marker compounds for authentication purposes.

Multivariate modelling techniques applied to metabolomic, elemental and isotopic fingerprints for the verification of regional geographical origin of Austrian carrots

Zora Jandric et al.

Summary: This exploratory study verified the regional geographical origin of carrots from specific production regions in Austria by combining chemical fingerprinting methods, achieving a predictive ability of 97% or better through the use of data fusion strategies. The chemometric classification models were able to efficiently and correctly differentiate carrot samples grown in different regions.

High-resolution mass spectrometry-based metabolomics for the discrimination between organic and conventional crops: A review

Alina Mihailova et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the latest applications, advantages, challenges and future perspectives of targeted and untargeted metabolomics for discrimination between organic and conventional crops. Studies show the potential of HRMS-based metabolomics approaches for discrimination between organic and conventional crops, with various primary and secondary metabolites reported as markers for organic production. Further validation and standardization of techniques are needed to facilitate the wider use of metabolomics for the authentication of organic crops.

Potential Role of L-Carnitine in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Alina Kepka et al.

Summary: L-carnitine plays a vital role in the mitochondrial metabolism of fatty acids in the central nervous system and has been found to be altered in patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Monitoring L-carnitine levels and acylcarnitine profiles can be useful in diagnosing and treating ASD. Supplementation of L-carnitine may help alleviate symptoms in ASD patients.

Effect of Agroecological Conditions on Biologically Active Compounds and Metabolome in Carrot

Martin Koudela et al.

Summary: The study showed that the carrot cultivars Cortina and Afalon exhibited high levels of ascorbic acid (AA) and total carotenes under different agroecological conditions, with organic farming resulting in higher total carotene content and 6-methoxymellein (6-MM) levels. Additionally, important compounds identified in the study included sitosterol, hexose, and various organic acids such as ferulic and coumaric acids.

Assessment of paprika geographical origin fraud by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD) fingerprinting

Guillem Campmajo et al.

Summary: This study proposed using high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD) fingerprints as chemical markers to classify paprika from five European regions, achieving an excellent classification accuracy of 97.9%. Additionally, chromatographic fingerprints were successfully used to detect and quantify different paprika geographical origin blend scenarios, with low external validation and prediction errors.
