Comparison of LC-ESI, DART, and ASAP for the analysis of oligomers migration from biopolymer food packaging materials in food (simulants)

Jazmin Osorio et al.

Summary: This study investigated the migration of oligomers from PLA and starch-based biopolymers to food simulants, focusing on the detection of oligomers using advanced techniques. The results demonstrated that ADI techniques are a promising alternative tool for evaluating the safety and legal compliance of food packaging materials.

Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method for the determination of polyethylene terephthalate and polybutylene terephthalate cyclic oligomers in blood samples

Dimitra Diamantidou et al.

Summary: A simple, fast, and sensitive method was developed for the analysis of cyclic oligomers in food packaging materials. The method allows for the determination of these oligomers in blood samples, providing a useful tool to assess potential hazards and health risks associated with food consumption.

Migration Testing of GPPS and HIPS Polymers: Swelling Effect Caused by Food Simulants Compared to Real Foods

Valeria Guazzotti et al.

Summary: This study investigates the migration kinetics of polystyrene under different temperatures using food simulants and real foods. The findings suggest that the recommendations provided by EU regulations may not always align with the physicochemical properties of the polymer.

Organocatalytic esterification of polysaccharides for food applications: A review

K. Ragavan et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the reaction mechanisms of organocatalytic esterification of carbohydrate polymers for food applications. Organocatalytically esterified polysaccharides (OEPs) have been synthesized using green catalyst-assisted reactions to graft short-chain fatty acids and small hydrophobic moieties onto carbohydrate polymer backbones. These SCFA-grafted OEPs can escape digestion and deliver SCFAs in the lower gut, and also have cardiometabolic benefits. OEPs can also be used for the development of food packaging with improved hydrophobicity and thermal stability.

Chemical testing of mechanically recycled polyethylene terephthalate for food packaging in the European Union

E. D. Tsochatzis et al.

Summary: Research suggests that PET material can be mechanically recycled and used in food contact applications, but the development of appropriate analytical tools for safety assessment is still in its infancy. Current safety evaluation methods need further improvement to ensure full compliance of rPET with safety standards.

Identification and prioritisation for risk assessment of phthalates, structurally similar substances and replacement substances potentially used as plasticisers in materials and articles intended to come into contact with food

Claude Lambre et al.

Summary: The EFSA Panel on Food Contact Materials is tasked with re-evaluating the health risks related to plasticisers in food contact materials. The prioritisation of plasticisers for further data collection and risk assessment is based on the date of risk assessment. Follow-up calls for data will be used for final ranking.

Organocatalytic acetylation of pea starch: Effect of alkanoyl and tartaryl groups on starch acetate performance

Natalia P. Vidal et al.

Summary: This study systematically optimized the organocatalytic acetylation of pea starch using tartaric acid as a catalyst. Acetylation improved the thermal and moisture resistivity, as well as the film-forming properties of pea starch. However, excessive acetylation resulted in decreased compatibility between highly acetylated and native pea starches, leading to worsened film properties.

Extraction and isolation of pectin rich in homogalacturonan domains from two cultivars of hawthorn berry (Crataegus pinnatifida)

Laura Roman et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the pectins from two hawthorn cultivars and found that the MI cultivar had a higher pectin yield and a structure closer to commercial pectins, which resulted in better emulsifying performance and stability.
