The Greatwall-Endosulfine Switch Accelerates Autophagic Flux during the Cell Divisions Leading to G1 Arrest and Entry into Quiescence in Fission Yeast

Alicia Vazquez-Bolado et al.

Summary: Nitrogen starvation in fission yeast induces cell cycle arrest and entry into quiescence, during which autophagy is activated to provide nitrogen for cell divisions. The Greatwall-Endosulfine switch is also activated to down-regulate PP2A/B55 activity, essential for cell cycle arrest and quiescent program implementation. In addition, the switch upregulates expression of autophagy-related genes, increasing autophagic flux.

A new perspective on the benzo(a)pyrene generated in tea seeds during roasting

Guoyan Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentration of BaP in different parts of tea seeds during roasting and established a new method to calculate the actual generated concentration of BaP. The results showed that the loss rate of BaP was highest in the husks and lowest in the peeled tea seeds. The study also confirmed the migration of BaP during roasting.

Empagliflozin Attenuates Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) in High Fat Diet Fed ApoE(-/-) Mice by Activating Autophagy and Reducing ER Stress and Apoptosis

Narjes Nasiri-Ansari et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that empagliflozin treatment can reduce glucose, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in NAFLD mice, decrease hepatic lipogenic and inflammatory gene expression, and attenuate NAFLD progression by promoting autophagy, reducing ER stress, and inhibiting apoptosis in the liver.

PRDX1 activates autophagy via the PTEN-AKT signaling pathway to protect against cisplatin-induced spiral ganglion neuron damage

Wenwen Liu et al.

Summary: Activated autophagic flux in SGNs after cisplatin treatment can alleviate SGN apoptosis and related hearing loss, indicating a neuroprotective role of autophagy. The antioxidant enzyme PRDX1 plays a crucial role in modulating autophagy in SGNs, which in turn activates the PTEN-AKT signaling pathway to trigger autophagy. These findings suggest potential therapeutic targets for drug-induced SNHL through autophagy activation.

Cancer cells escape autophagy inhibition via NRF2-induced macropinocytosis

Hua Su et al.

Summary: Although many cancers rely on autophagy for nutrient acquisition, blocking autophagy alone does not effectively inhibit tumor growth. Research has shown that blocking autophagy can lead to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) upregulating an alternative nutrient pathway, macropinocytosis (MP), allowing tumor cells to extract nutrients from outside sources. This switch from autophagy to MP, driven by the activation of transcription factor NRF2, presents a potential therapeutic strategy for inhibiting tumor growth and regression.
