Betulinic acid alleviates zearalenone-induced uterine injury in mice

Chenglin Yang et al.

Summary: Zearalenone (ZEA) is a mycotoxin that has estrogen-like biological activity and poses a major threat to animal reproduction. Betulinic acid (BA) is a natural plant compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study found that ZEA caused uterine damage and altered hormone secretion, while BA showed a protective effect and reversed the damage caused by ZEA.

Ameliorative effect of betulinic acid against zearalenone exposure triggers testicular dysfunction and oxidative stress in mice via p38/ERK MAPK inhibition and Nrf2-mediated antioxidant defense activation

Xing Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that betulinic acid (BA) can alleviate testicular damage caused by zearalenone (ZEA) through regulating the arrangement of seminiferous tubules, exfoliation of lumen cells, and increased cell apoptosis. BA also restored hormone levels and sperm motility, and reconstructed the blood-testis barrier to alleviate ZEA-induced testicular damage. Furthermore, BA activated the Nrf2 pathway to alleviate ZEA-exposed testicular oxidative stress, and inhibited the p38/ERK MAPK pathway to moderate ZEA-evoked testicular inflammation.

Procyanidins inhibit zearalenone-induced apoptosis and oxidative stress of porcine testis cells through activation of Nrf2 signaling pathway

Rong Yan et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effects of procyanidins (PC) on cell apoptosis caused by zearalenone (ZEA) and validated the role of Nrf2 in this process. The findings demonstrated that PC could enhance the cell antioxidant capacity, mitigate ZEA-induced cell apoptosis, and promote the expression of Nrf2 and its downstream genes. This discovery contributes to the clinical application of PC in preventing reproductive toxicity caused by ZEA.

New progress in understanding roles of nitric oxide during hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury

Yi-Ping Zhang et al.

Summary: Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (HIRI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in liver surgery and transplantation. Nitric oxide (NO) plays a controversial and complicated role in HIRI, with eNOS-derived NO showing a protective effect and iNOS-derived NO exacerbating inflammation and oxidative stress. New progress has been made in understanding the roles of NO in HIRI, including its effects on apoptosis, inflammatory cytokines, and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Modulating NO may be a potential direction for HIRI treatment.

Endoplasmic reticulum stress-mediated cell death in liver injury

Jian Zhang et al.

Summary: The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) plays a crucial role in maintaining cellular homeostasis, and ER stress (ERS) and unfolded protein response (UPR) are induced when the body is exposed to adverse external stimuli. Different modes of cell death, including autophagy, apoptosis, ferroptosis, and pyroptosis, are induced by ERS through three major transmembrane receptors on the ER membrane. These modes of cell death are important in the occurrence and development of various diseases. The liver, as the largest metabolic organ, has a well-developed ER system in hepatocytes. ERS is closely related to liver injury and modulating ERS shows promise for treating liver injury.
