Raman spectroscopic strategy for the discrimination of recycled polyethylene terephthalate in water bottles

Rosa Penalver et al.

Summary: A reliable and quick strategy for discriminating between recycled and virgin PET water bottles was developed using Raman spectroscopy combined with chemometrics. Chemometric models were created to classify PET samples and determine the level of recycled material in PET bottles.

Authentication of recycled plastic content in water bottles using volatile fingerprint and chemometrics

Rosa Penalver et al.

Summary: The environment is threatened by increasing plastic residue, and plastic recycling is an interesting solution. A new method using SHS-GC-MS was developed to measure the volatile organic profile of virgin and recycled PET samples. The study identified common compounds in recycled PET samples and proposed a statistical model to quantify the recycled plastic content in PET samples for the first time.

Comparison of the ability of UV-Vis and UPLC-Q-TOF-MS combined with chemometrics to discriminate recycled and virgin polyethylene

Zhi-Feng Chen et al.

Summary: This study used UVVis and UPLC-Q-TOFMS techniques combined with chemometrics to provide spectral and mass fingerprinting for PE, developing two methods to distinguish recycled and virgin PE. The UV-Vis combined with chemometrics proved to be a more accessible, simpler, and faster approach for discrimination. The UV spectrum region of 237-331 nm was identified as a marker region, while UPLC-Q-TOF-MS detected 2314 ions and identified 48 candidate chemicals, highlighting the importance of strict identification and classification when using recycled PE as food contact material.

Rapid discrimination of recycled and virgin poly(ethylene terephthalate) based on non-targeted screening of semi-volatile organic compounds using a novel method of DSI/GCxGC-Q-TOF-MS coupled with various chemometrics

Tian-Ying Hao et al.

Summary: This study successfully discriminated different types of PET samples and identified 267 substances using chemometrics and chromatography tools. The cross-discrimination method helped identify large sample sizes and improve prediction accuracy. The markers in the samples came from food, medicine, cosmetics, pesticides, fuel, plastic, and industrial sources, containing highly toxic chemicals, suggesting the need for closed-loop recycling and sorting of plastic wastes.

Narrating plastics governance: policy narratives in the European plastics strategy

Ellen Palm et al.

Summary: An analysis of European plastics governance policy narratives reveals that resource inefficiency and pollution narratives are most prominent, with the circular economy serving as a policy solution cutting across different narratives. However, there are deeper ideological divisions over the exact definition of the circular economy and the different implications it has for plastics governance.

Safety assessment of the process PET STAR RECYCLING, based on Starlinger iV+ technology, used to recycle post-consumer PET into food contact materials

Claude Lambre et al.

Summary: The EFSA Panel evaluated the safety of the PET recycling process PET STAR RECYCLING, highlighting the critical steps of drying and crystallisation, extrusion and crystallisation, and solid-state polycondensation. Control parameters such as temperature, air flow, pressure, and residence time are crucial for the efficiency of decontamination in the process. The migration level of potential contaminants into food was found to be below 0.1 μg/kg, indicating that the recycled PET is safe for use in materials and articles for contact with all types of foodstuffs.
