Extension of the eSAFT-VR Mie equation of state from aqueous to non-aqueous electrolyte solutions

Nefeli Novak et al.

Summary: In this study, the eSAFT-VR Mie equation of state is extended to low relative permittivity, non-aqueous solutions. Different relative permittivity relations and approaches for the characteristic diameters are investigated. Results show that a mole fraction based mixing rule for the relative permittivity yields the best extrapolation from aqueous to non-aqueous solutions.

Comparison of models for the relative static permittivity with the e-CPA equation of state

Martin Due Olsen et al.

The model based on ion association performs the best in describing the experimental data. However, it has limitations in predicting individual ion activity coefficients.

How to account for the concentration dependency of relative permittivity in the Debye-Huckel and Born equations

Gabriel M. Silva et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the introduction of concentration-dependent relative permittivity in activity coefficient models. The impact of using experimental correlation and the Michelsen-Mollerup-Breil model for relative permittivity in Debye-Huckel and Born equations is evaluated. Results show that introducing relative permittivity before deriving the Helmholtz free energy has the best overall performance. A general method is derived to include any relative permittivity correlation for concentration-dependency before the charging process, with no clear advantage on using charge-dependent or independent models.

Further reflections about the ?Born? term used in thermodynamic models for electrolytes

Jean-Pierre Simonin

Summary: This paper is a follow-up of previous work about the ''Born term, which is often used in explicit-solvent models for electrolytes. The paper finds an inconsistency in the commonly used expression for the ''Born term and investigates its relevance in different situations. The results indicate that this term is unsuitable, and the possibility of deriving a formula in the spirit of the original Born equation is considered.

Insight into the ionic atmosphere effect: Comparison of theories for electrolytes at the primitive level

Jean-Pierre Simonin et al.

Summary: In their seminal paper of 1923, Debye and Huckel provided the first appropriate description of the effect of ionic strength on the thermodynamic properties of dilute electrolyte solutions. This landmark work paved the way for what was later called the primitive model of electrolytes. Numerical simulations have been reported in the literature for salts in a continuous solvent in order to compare with various analytical theories and derive new formulas for individual ion activity coefficients.

Importance of the Relative Static Permittivity in electrolyte SAFT-VR Mie Equations of State

Pierre J. Walker et al.

Summary: This study examines the influence of relative static permittivity (RSP) in electrolyte equations of state, focusing on aqueous sodium chloride. Different models for RSP and electrostatic terms were used and compared, with RSP models showing a more significant impact. The balance between Born-solvation and Debye-Huckel or Mean-Spherical Approximation terms is important, with RSP models playing a significant role in this balance, especially when they have a dependence on solvent or ion composition.

Statistical theory of individual ionic activity coefficients of electrolytes with multiple - Charged ions including seawater

Werner Ebeling et al.

Summary: Based on statistical mechanics methods, this study presents analytical nonlinear extensions of the Debye-Huckel and Mean-Spherical approximations for the calculation of individual activity coefficients in electrolytic solutions. The DHX and MSX approximations generalize the results from cluster theory and can handle various effects such as cationic solvation and weak association effects in multivalent ions.

An analysis of the parameters in the Debye-Huckel theory

Li Sun et al.

Summary: The Debye-Huckel theory is a widely used method for counting electrostatic forces in thermodynamic models. This study investigates the effects of two important parameters, ion size parameters and relative static permittivity of the solution, on the theory's accuracy. Three different activity coefficient models are analyzed and compared for 14 salt systems to better understand the capabilities and limitations of the Debye-Huckel theory. The flexibility of adjusting ion size parameters and relative static permittivity in the original theory is also explored.

Calculations of individual ionic activity coefficients of chloride salt in aqueous solutions

Li Sun

Summary: The individual ionic activity coefficients of chloride salts in aqueous solutions are predicted using the II + IW theory. Two combinations of the II + IW theory, mean spherical approximation plus Born equation, are proposed in this work. Different ion radii are used for calculations. The predicted results are presented and compared with experimental data. The study finds that the II + IW theory can reasonably predict the individual ionic activity coefficients of specific electrolytes in aqueous solutions, and adjusting ion radius can improve the modeling performance.

Investigation of the Limits of the Linearized Poisson-Boltzmann Equation

Gabriel M. Silva et al.

Summary: This study compares the numerical solution of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation with the analytical solution of its linearized version using the Debye-Huckel equations. The activity coefficients of different types of electrolytes at different temperatures were calculated to verify the accuracy of the linearized equation. The results show that the linearized equation deviates more from the full Poisson-Boltzmann equation at lower molalities, and both solutions converge at higher molalities. For electrolytes with lower valencies and larger distances of closest approach, the full Debye-Huckel equation can accurately represent the activity coefficients with low divergence from the nonlinear equation. The size-dissimilar full Debye-Huckel equation is an improvement over the common ion diameters approach when compared to the numerical solution of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation.

On the derivations of the Debye-Huckel equations

Gabriel M. Silva et al.

Summary: This work derives the basic thermodynamic properties and activity coefficients equations from the linearised Poisson-Boltzmann equation. The derivations are based on classical thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, with a comparison of their differences and limitations. It demonstrates that the original derivation by Debye and Huckel contains unnecessary considerations and clarifies that the Debye and Guntelberg charging processes result in different thermodynamic properties.

Physical interpretation of theories of homogeneous electrolytes in the primitive model

Dirk Gillespie

Summary: This paper analyzes two recent theories, MCSA and MSAX, of the electrostatic excess chemical potential of homogeneous electrolytes modeled in the primitive model. The analysis uncovers the close numerical agreement between these seemingly very different theories and explains the physical meaning of the MCSA theory as the electrostatic interactions of ionic screening clouds in order to define the terms of the MSAX theory. Furthermore, a mathematical analysis shows that despite using different mathematical and physical approximations, all these theories couple the distinct physical regimes to accurately calculate the intermediate ion densities.

Explicit solvent theory of salt-induced dielectric decrement

Sahin Buyukdagli

Summary: In this study, we propose an electrolyte model composed of solvent molecules and salt ions, and investigate the salt-induced dielectric decrement by considering salt-solvent correlations. By using a virial expansion to treat the salt charges, we are able to explicitly include the many-body salt-solvent interactions and explain the experimentally observed linear decay of electrolyte permittivity with added dilute salt. Our findings indicate that the reduction of solvent permittivity is caused by the salt screening of polarization charges, which suppresses the dielectric response of the solvent. We also demonstrate that our model can accurately reproduce various experimental trends, such as the attenuation of electrolyte permittivity with rising temperature and its intensification with salt valency.

Summary: The activity coefficients in aqueous solutions of alkali metal nitrates at 298 K were calculated using experimental values of the static dielectric constant of solutions and the generalized Debye-Huckel theory. The study showed that the dependence of activity coefficients on cation radius and the influence of potassium, rubidium, and cesium cations on activity coefficients in the presence of nitrate ions can be reproduced without optimizing model parameters in certain systems. Factors such as hydration and ion association were considered in evaluating the thermodynamic properties of the studied systems.
