Occurrence of phthalates in different food matrices: A systematic review of the main sources of contamination and potential risks

Julia Moraes da Costa et al.

Summary: This systematic review focuses on the presence of phthalates (PAEs) in different food categories, their sources, potential risks, and factors affecting migration from food contact materials. Nineteen PAEs were identified in various food items, with some exceeding legal limits. DEHP had the highest occurrence, particularly in milk and dairy products, oils and fats, fish, cereals, condiments and sauces, meat, and fruits and vegetables. The risk of exceeding tolerable daily intake was high for DEHP and DBP in certain food categories for both children and adults. Temperature, contact time, fat percent, and acidity were positively associated with PAEs migration. The contamination of PAEs occurs at multiple stages of the production chain.

In vivo and in vitro short-term bisphenol A exposures disrupt testicular energy metabolism and negatively impact spermatogenesis in zebrafish

Hemily Batista-Silva et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of Bisphenol A (BPA) on testicular energy metabolism and morphology in zebrafish through in vitro and short-term in vivo experiments. Results showed that BPA exposure decreased lactate and glycogen content, altered enzyme activity, induced apoptosis in testicular cells, and affected spermatogenesis in male zebrafish. Overall, short-term BPA exposure was found to impact energy metabolism and spermatogenesis in zebrafish.

Calcium influx and spermatogenesis in the testis and liver enzyme activities in the zebrafish are rapidly modulated by the calcium content of the water

Hemily Batista-Silva et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of varying environmental Ca2+ concentrations on the influx of Ca2+ to the testis, testicular morphology, and liver enzymes in the zebrafish. The results showed that different Ca2+ concentrations in the water can affect the influx of Ca2+ in the testis, cause morphological changes in the testes, and induce liver damage.

Perinatal exposure to a glyphosate pesticide formulation induces offspring liver damage

Carla Elise Heinz Rieg et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the effects of perinatal exposure to glyphosate-based herbicide (GBH) in offspring's liver. The results showed that perinatal exposure to GBH increased Ca2+ influx, oxidative damage and inflammation in the liver of offspring. Additionally, the study found that GBH exposure led to increased levels of iron in the liver, blood and bone marrow, which might contribute to iron-driven hepatotoxicity. These findings indicate the potential harmful effects of GBH on liver function in offspring.

Use of biomarkers in monitoring pollution status of urban rivers, Limpopo, South Africa

Livhuwani E. Nephale et al.

Summary: The study found that enzyme activity and histological changes in fish can be used as potential biomarkers for assessing aquatic pollution in rivers. Elevated levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and ammonia downstream of wastewater treatment plants negatively impacted enzyme activity and histology in fish.
