Dietary coriander (Coriandrum sativum L) oil improves antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, innate immune responses and resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Sweta Das et al.

Summary: The use of coriander essential oil in tilapia feed improved the health and resistance to bacterial infection of the fish. The incorporation of 1% coriander oil in the feed resulted in increased hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, mean cell hemoglobin, and superoxide dismutase activity. The coriander oil-fed groups also showed higher survival rates and increased expression of IgM and IL-8.

Largescale mortality of Oreochromis mossambicus in lakes and reservoirs of Karnataka due to coinfection of Tilapia Lake virus (TiLV) and multidrug-resistant Aeromonas veronii: An emerging fish disease in India

T. Suresh et al.

Summary: The culture of tilapia in India has become increasingly important and is now the second most widely farmed fish species in the world. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in large-scale mortalities caused by coinfections of DNA and RNA viruses with bacteria, fungi, and parasites, posing a major global threat to tilapia and aquaculture. A study conducted in Karnataka, India, investigated the mass mortality of wild populations of tilapia in reservoirs and lakes. The results showed the presence of TiLV and A. veronii infections, with TiLV causing syncytial hepatitis lesions in tilapia.

Impact of lactoferrin supplementation on oxidative stress, gene expression and immunity dysfunction induced by Aeromonas veronii in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Nada M. A. Hashem et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of bovine lactoferrin dietary supplementation on haematological and immunological parameters, antioxidant genes, stress markers and disease resistance in Nile tilapia. The results showed that LF supplementation at doses of 800mg/kg or 1200mg/kg improved haematological and immunological parameters, and decreased stress markers, both before and after infection.

Summary: The present study identified that Withania ethanol extract and Basella methanol extract exhibited high antibacterial activity against Aeromonas infection in Nile tilapia. In vivo experiments showed that fish fed with EW and MB fortified diets had lower mortality rates and improved immune system indicators. Moreover, EW demonstrated significantly better antibacterial efficacy compared to MB, and prophylactic treatment showed better results than therapeutic treatment.

Pathogenicity of Aeromonas veronii causing mass mortalities of Odontobutis potamophila and its induced host immune response

Guoxing Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that Aeromonas veronii is the pathogen causing mass mortalities of Odontobutis potamophila. The identity of the representative isolate Stl3-1 was confirmed through morphological, physiological, and biochemical features analysis as well as gene sequencing. Histopathological analysis revealed severe tissue lesions in the fish caused by this isolate. Additionally, the study found that the immune-related gene expressions in O. potamophila infected by A. veronii were significantly up-regulated.

Aeromonas and Human Health Disorders: Clinical Approaches

Rafael Bastos Goncalves Pessoa et al.

Summary: Aeromonas is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria that naturally inhabit aquatic environments and are commonly regarded as pathogens of fish and other animals. They have gained attention in medical trials due to their ability to colonize and infect humans. They are widely spread on various sources such as water, soil, vegetables, and food. The main clinical manifestations include gastrointestinal disorders, wound and soft tissue infections, and septicemia. Aeromonas species, such as A. hydrophila, A. caviae, and A. veronii biovar sobria, are considered potential human pathogens. The bacteria show a diversified susceptibility profile and inherent resistance to ampicillin. Further research is needed to fully understand the infectious processes and develop effective approaches for detection and medical intervention.

Non-antibiotic approaches to combat motile Aeromonas infections in aquaculture: Current state of knowledge and future perspectives

Le Thanh Dien et al.

Summary: Inland aquaculture, particularly in low and middle-income countries, plays a crucial role in global food security, but its sustainable development is hindered by disease epidemics, especially those caused by bacteria such as Aeromonas species. This article provides an overview of motile Aeromonas infections, antibiotic use, and antimicrobial resistance, as well as non-antibiotic approaches to control these infections. It discusses the current state of knowledge, limitations, and future research perspectives, including vaccines, microencapsulated synbiotics, exogenous metabolites, and novel lytic bacteriophage cocktails.

Isolation, Identification, and Pathogenicity of Aeromonas veronii, the Causal Agent of Hemorrhagic Septicemia in Channel Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) in China

Gaixiao Qin et al.

Summary: This study isolated a pathogenic strain ZZ051 from hemorrhagic channel catfish and identified it as Aeromonas veronii using physiological and biochemical methods, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and MALDI-TOF-MS analysis. The isolated strain was confirmed to be the causative agent of the catfish disease through artificial infection. It was highly sensitive to enrofloxacin but resistant to florfenicol. This research provides a theoretical basis for preventing and controlling hemorrhagic disease in channel catfish.
