Acute ammonia exposure combined with heat stress impaired the histological features of gills and liver tissues and the expression responses of immune and antioxidative related genes in Nile tilapia

Fatma Esam et al.

Summary: This study found that the combined exposure of ammonia and heat stress can cause histological changes in the gills and liver tissues of Nile tilapia, as well as affect the expression of immune and antioxidative related genes.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of varying levels of water salinity on the growth performance, survival rate, and blood biochemistry of African catfish. The results showed that high salinity hindered the growth performance and health status of the fish, while heat stress improved the antioxidative status.

Structural characteristics and mucosal immune response of the interbranchial lymphoid tissue in the gills of flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus)

Chengcheng Liang et al.

Summary: This study identifies a specialized lymphoepithelial tissue called interbranchial lymphoid tissue (ILT) in fish species. The ILT's structural variation and mucosal immune functions are not well-known. The researchers found Zap-70(+) cell aggregates in the ILT, confirming its location in the epithelium covering the bottom of the interbranchial cleft. The ILT was found to be an important site for local T cell-mediated immunity in flounder's gills.

Identification and functional analysis of dual-specificity phosphatases (DUSP) genes in Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) against temperature and Edwardsiella tarda stress

Ping Han et al.

Summary: In this study, 28 DUSP genes in Japanese flounder were identified and classified. The results showed that these genes were conservative and functionally-constrained during evolution, and they were expressed at different developmental stages. Additionally, the study revealed differential responses of these genes to temperature variation and bacterial infection.

Identification, evolution and expression analyses of mapk gene family in Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) provide insight into its divergent functions on biotic and abiotic stresses response

Yingjie Qiao et al.

Summary: This study identified 14 putative mapk genes in Japanese flounder, which were divided into three main subfamilies: ERK, JNK, and p38 MAPK. Evolutionary analysis revealed strong purifying selection on mapk genes, indicating high conservation in gene structure and protein motifs. Additionally, expression patterns under different stresses suggested potential diverse functions of mapk genes in Japanese flounder.

Metalloproteases in gonad formation and ovulation

Yong Zhu

Summary: Metalloproteases, including Mmp, Adam, Adamts, and Timp, play crucial roles in ovulation and gonad formation processes. These enzymes are regulated by hormones like LH and progestin, and are involved in PGC migration, germ cell development, and sex determination in vertebrates. More research is needed to fully understand their functions and mechanisms in these processes.

The hsp40 Gene Family in Japanese Flounder: Identification, Phylogenetic Relationships, Molecular Evolution Analysis, and Expression Patterns

Weijie Yan et al.

Summary: Heat shock proteins, particularly the hsp40 subfamily, play important roles in developmental stages and stress responses in cells. A comprehensive analysis of hsp40 in Japanese flounder revealed that they are conservative during evolution, express in different developmental stages, and may act as sentinels in healthy organisms. Additionally, hsp40 genes in Japanese flounder showed differential expression patterns after a bacterial challenge, indicating their potential role in immune responses.

The transcriptomic responses of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) to high temperature stress alone, and in combination with moderate hypoxia

Anne Beemelmanns et al.

Summary: Increasing temperature to 20 degrees C alone, and in combination with hypoxia, resulted in differential expression of genes involved in similar pathways in Atlantic salmon. However, heat shock and immune-related genes in fish exposed to 20 degrees C and hypoxia were more affected, and strongly related to phenotypic characteristics such as growth. This study provides valuable information on how environmental challenges affect the expression of stress-, metabolic- and immune-related genes in fish, identifying potential biomarker genes for fish health and welfare improvement.

Stress-primed secretory autophagy promotes extracellular BDNF maturation by enhancing MMP9 secretion

Silvia Martinelli et al.

Summary: The study revealed that high levels of glucocorticoid stress can promote secretory autophagy of matrix metalloproteinase 9, increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor processing, and potentially alter adult synaptic plasticity. These findings uncover a cellular stress adaptation mechanism that may provide new insights into the pathophysiology of stress-related disorders.
