Study on CO diffusion law and concentration distribution function under ventilation after blasting in high-altitude tunnel

Xue Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the diffusion and concentration distribution of hazardous gases, such as carbon monoxide (CO), after blasting of plateau tunnels. The results demonstrated that the distribution of CO in the tunnel was closely related to the flow field, and the concentration increased exponentially with altitude. A calculation function was determined to directly obtain the CO concentration in the tunnel under different conditions, providing guidance for the safety of plateau tunnel construction.

Experimental and Numerical Study of Plug-Holing with Lateral Smoke Exhaust in Tunnel Fires

Qiulin Liu et al.

Summary: A series of experiments and simulations were conducted to investigate the effect of lateral smoke exhaust in tunnel fires. The phenomenon of plug-holing was observed and analyzed, taking into account the exhaust vent size, heat release rate, and exhaust velocity. The results show that the smaller the heat release rate and the greater the exhaust velocity, the stronger the plug-holing effect. On the other hand, a narrow exhaust vent helps to inhibit plug-holing. Meanwhile, a modified Froude number is proposed to determine the occurrence of plug-holing for lateral smoke exhaust systems, and it is found to be more accurate than the existing criteria.

Fire evacuation strategy analysis in long metro tunnels

Junfeng Chen et al.

Summary: During emergency situations in metro tunnels, the traditional strategy of moving towards the next station can waste time and increase the risk of casualties. Therefore, an internal wind evacuation strategy is proposed to improve evacuation efficiency, especially during the train travel stage. The research results indicate that the internal wind evacuation strategy is the best option when available.

Numerical and experimental study on the critical velocity and smoke maximum temperature in the connected area of branch tunnel

Haihang Li et al.

Summary: Experimental tests and numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the critical velocity and maximum smoke temperature in the connected area of a branch tunnel with varying fire locations. It was found that the enlarged cross-sectional area in the branch tunnel shortened the back-layering length, and a revised model was proposed for back-layering length. The higher tunnel height affected the critical condition of large fires and resulted in a larger transition point for dimensionless critical velocity.

Jie Wang et al.

Summary: This study conducts a series of fire tests in a simulated aircraft cargo compartment to measure flame heights and axial plume temperatures. A prediction formula for flame heights is established based on Heskestad's model, and the influence of air entrainment on flame height is revealed. By comparing with other models, the limitations of the model used in this study are identified, and prediction equations for axial temperature distribution are proposed.

Experimental study on the effects of exhaust vent layout on plug-holing for ceiling central smoke extraction in road tunnel fires

Yingli Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the phenomenon of plug-holing induced by ceiling central smoke extraction in road tunnel fires through a series of reduced-scale experiments. The influencing factors for the occurrence of plug-holing are analyzed by changing the vent width, heat release rate, and the area of the ceiling extraction vent. The experimental results show that increasing any of these factors can increase the smoke exhaust flow rate corresponding to the occurrence of plug-holing. A modified Froude number is proposed to predict plug-holing, and a constant critical value of 4.71 (Fr-c = 4.71) is determined regardless of the variation in the influencing factors. These findings provide valuable insights for the design of ceiling central smoke extraction in road tunnels.

Experimental study of back-layering length and critical velocity in longitudinally ventilated tunnel fire with various rectangular cross-sections

Tianhang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of tunnel aspect ratios on smoke back flow in longitudinally ventilated tunnel fires through scale model tests and theoretical analyses. The increase of tunnel width was found to enhance heat transfer and reduce smoke layer thickness, leading to decreased back-layering length and critical velocity. New correlations were proposed to predict these parameters with improved physical significance, showing good agreement with experimental data. Additionally, it was observed that non-dimensional critical velocity decreases with increasing aspect ratio under small fire conditions, ultimately approaching a limiting value. The determination of fire scale depends on aspect ratio when non-dimensional heat release rate is lower than 0.44, suggesting a relationship between tunnel geometry and fire size.

Plug-holing height and complete plug-holing phenomenon in naturally ventilated tunnel fires with vertical shaft

Shengzhong Zhao et al.

Summary: The ventilation performance and plug-holing phenomenon of vertical shaft in tunnel fires were analyzed through numerical simulations, revealing that shaft length and height have significant impacts on ventilation efficiency and plug-holing height, with plug-holing height being more sensitive to shaft length but less sensitive to shaft height. In car fire scenarios, the occurrence of complete plug-holing can be determined by checking if the dimensionless plug-holing height meets a specific critical value.

Effects of altitude on smoke movement velocity and longitudinal temperature distribution in tunnel fires

Bin Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of altitude on smoke movement velocity and longitudinal temperature distribution in tunnel fires through simulation experiments. It is found that smoke movement velocity is proportional to altitude and fire heat release rate. As altitude increases, smoke movement velocity and thermal convection with tunnel walls increase, leading to faster longitudinal temperature attenuation, which follows a distribution pattern of two exponential functions.

Influence of fire heat release rate (HRR) evolutions on fire-induced pressure variations in air-tight compartments

Junyi Li et al.

Summary: The research investigates the influence of fire heat release rate (HRR) evolution on fire-induced pressure variation in contemporary buildings' air-tight compartments. It demonstrates that higher fire growth/decay rate coefficient and maximum steady state HRR result in increased over-pressure/under-pressure peaks, with different timings for pressure peak values based on the fire growth/decay exponent. Additionally, low-frequency oscillatory behavior of gaseous fuel is observed during well-ventilated phases in one test.
