Chemical exposure and flammability risks of upholstered furniture

Debra Harris et al.

Summary: Upholstered furniture poses fire hazards to consumers, but using effective fire barrier materials can reduce the risk of combustion. This study developed methods to evaluate flame retardant exposure and flammability performance on upholstered chairs, finding that volatile organic compound exposure was low during consumer use. The study suggests that upholstered chairs constructed with an efficient fire barrier material can achieve both human health and fire safety benefits without the need for added flame retardants.
