Effects of shell sand content on soil physical properties and salt ions under simulated rainfall leaching

Ping Chen et al.

Summary: The study revealed the influence of shell sand content on soil physical properties and salt ion changes. Different ratios of shell sand to fluvo-aquic soil significantly altered the soil properties, with a specific impact order observed. Shell sand content can significantly affect soil water and salt transport, with an appropriate content effectively improving soil water storage and salt inhibition effects.

Effects of sodium adsorption ratio and electrolyte concentration on soil saturated hydraulic conductivity

Xinmin Liu et al.

Summary: Sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) and electrolyte concentration (EC) have a significant impact on water movement in soil. This study derived an analytical function between electrostatic repulsive pressure (PEDL) and SAR/EC, and found that soil water SAR and EC control PEDL, which in turn affects the saturated soil hydraulic conductivity (Ks). The theoretical calculations demonstrate that PEDL decreases with increasing EC and increases with increasing SAR, resulting in a reduction in Ks.

Experimental study on simultaneous heat-water-salt migration of bare soil subjected to evaporation

Xudong Zhang et al.

Summary: Evaporation in shallow soil has a significant impact on the properties of surface soil. Understanding the rule and mechanism of heat-water-salt migration in surface soil under evaporation conditions is of great importance in engineering geology and environmental science. This study conducted indoor evaporation tests on shallow saline soil and observed the heat-water-salt migration process. The results provide insights into the water-salt transport in arid areas.

Saline soils worldwide: Identifying the most promising areas for saline agriculture

Katarzyna Negacz et al.

Summary: Salinization poses a major challenge for agriculture, but it can be addressed through saline agriculture methods. This study aims to identify locations and surface area of saline soils and assess the potential for saline agricultural production. The results show that salt-affected soils cover a total area of 17 million km(2), with the largest potential lying in non-depleted water basins totaling 2 million km(2). Further socio-economic analysis is needed to determine priority countries for sustainable food production exploration.

Multi-objective optimization of water and nitrogen regimes for drip-fertigated sugar beet in a desert climate

Fulai Yan et al.

Summary: The scarcity of water resources and low water-nitrogen use efficiency pose significant challenges to the sustainable development of sugar beet in desert climates. A field experiment was conducted to investigate the responses of drip-fertigated sugar beet to varying water and nitrogen supplies. The results showed that the optimal combination of irrigation amount and nitrogen rate was beneficial for the sustainable production of sugar beet in desert climates.

Modeling strategies to balance salt leaching and nitrogen loss for drip irrigation with saline water in arid regions

Zheng Che et al.

Summary: Soil salinization has been a major problem in arid and semi-arid regions, affecting agricultural sustainability. To address the contradiction between salt accumulation and nitrogen loss, a new index called leaching balance index of soil salinity and nitrogen (LBI) was proposed. Using the LBI, appropriate mulched drip irrigation and fertigation management practices were studied for cotton cultivation in Xinjiang. Simulation scenarios showed that increasing the number of fertigation splits and using alternate water salinities during different growth stages could reduce the LBI and improve irrigation and soil management sustainability.

Optimal irrigation amount and nitrogen rate improved seed cotton yield while maintaining fiber quality of drip-fertigated cotton in northwest China

Xianghao Hou et al.

Summary: Improving the quality of cotton fiber is crucial for enhancing the competitiveness in the international market, but balancing this with maintaining seed cotton yield remains a challenge. The study found that increasing irrigation amount and nitrogen rate led to higher seed cotton yield, with the optimal combination being 100% ETc irrigation and 350 kg N ha-1 nitrogen rate.

Optimization of water and fertilizer management improves yield, water, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium uptake and use efficiency of cotton under drip fertigation

Haidong Wang et al.

Summary: Cotton plays a vital role in the economic development of northwest China as a fiber and oil crop, but the lack of appropriate water and fertilizer management strategies has hindered its harmonious growth. Field experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of different drip irrigation and fertilizer levels on cotton dry matter, yield, and water and fertilizer use efficiency. Results showed that increasing irrigation water amount led to higher seed cotton and lint yields. An irrigation amount of 1.0 ETC and N-P-K rate of 250-43.7-41.5 kg ha(-1) was found to be the best drip fertigation strategy for cotton production in arid regions of northwest China, considering cotton yield, N, P, and K uptake and use efficiency. Deficit irrigation and fertilization levels resulted in decreased cotton yield.

Cotton/halophytes intercropping decreases salt accumulation and improves soil physicochemical properties and crop productivity in saline-alkali soils under mulched drip irrigation: A three-year field experiment

Jiaping Liang et al.

Summary: Soil salinization poses a serious threat to soil quality and sustainable agricultural development in arid and semi-arid regions. This study investigated the effects of a new cotton/halophytes intercropping system on soil salinization and crop production, showing that this system had advantages in salt removal and increasing cotton yield compared to monoculture cotton. The results suggest that the cotton/Suaeda salsa intercropping and cotton/alfalfa intercropping systems could be effective long-term agronomic solutions for improving soil salinization in arid areas.

Summary: Excess salt accumulation in the root zone causes soil salinization, which affects soil health, biodiversity, and food security. The authors used machine learning algorithms to predict global soil salinization under changing climate in the 21st century, identifying hotspots in drylands such as South America, southern and western Australia, Mexico, southwest United States, and South Africa. Conversely, they project a decrease in soil salinity in northwest United States, the Horn of Africa, Eastern Europe, Turkmenistan, and west Kazakhstan in response to climate change.
