Experimental investigation of the relation between the surface integrity and bending fatigue strength of carburized gears

DiFa Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, bending fatigue tests were conducted on carburized gears with different surface integrities to investigate the effects of manufacturing parameters and surface integrities on gear fatigue. The experimental results revealed that the improvement of surface integrities after shot peening increased the nominal bending stress number (fatigue limit) by 6.3%-31.1%, with an amplitude range of 39-143 MPa. A supervised learning algorithm of a random forest was used to determine the contribution of surface hardness and surface residual stress to the nominal stress number, and an empirical formula was proposed to predict the nominal stress number considering the surface integrities, with a prediction error of less than 7.53%.

Parameter Estimation for Univariate Hydrological Distribution Using Improved Bootstrap with Small Samples

Hanlin Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes an improved Bootstrap method and combines it with three commonly used parameter estimation methods, i.e., improved Bootstrap with method of moments (IBMOM), maximum likelihood estimation (IBMLE), and maximum entropy principle (IBMEP). A series of numerical experiments and a case study on the estimation of distribution parameters demonstrate that the proposed methods provide more accurate and less deviated results compared to conventional Bootstrap and without-Bootstrap approaches. Moreover, the improved Bootstrap method shows significant improvement in parameter estimation when smaller sample size is used. The method based on improved Bootstrap offers a new solution to the requirement of large sample size in quality hydrological frequency analysis.

Effect of carburizing process on high cycle fatigue behavior of 18CrNiMo7-6 steel

Shengwei Qin et al.

Summary: This research studied the effects of carburizing process on the material properties and fatigue performance of 18CrNiMo7-6 gear steel. The evolution processes of hardness, microstructure, and residual stress of carburized specimens during fatigue testing were observed, and the initiation of fatigue cracks and the transformation of retained austenite were analyzed. The results showed that the fatigue strength of carburized specimens increased and then decreased with the increase of effective case depth, and the fatigue failure mode changed from surface failure to internal failure after carburizing.

Random fatigue life prediction of automobile lower arm via modified Corten-Dolan model

Xizhou Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fatigue life of the rear suspension lower arm of a passenger car. The road load signals are collected and processed, and the distribution characteristics are analyzed. A parametric method is used to extrapolate the load signal and compile a one-dimensional load spectrum of the lower arm. The Corten-Dolan model is modified based on nonlinear fatigue cumulative damage theory, and an improved fatigue life prediction model is established and validated with experimental data.

An improved bootstrap method introducing error ellipse for numerical analysis of fatigue life parameters

Haiyan Ge et al.

Summary: This paper introduces error ellipse into the bootstrap method to improve the reliability of small samples and the credibility of the S-N curve. Two error ellipse models are proposed based on the bootstrap method and the reliability of the original samples. Case analysis proves the feasibility of the tangent error ellipse method and its impact on the accuracy of parameter estimation with small samples.

Summary: In this study, the influence of defects on the fatigue life of selective laser melted Ti-6Al-4V alloy was explored using a machine learning method, specifically supported by a support vector machine. Through a combination of high cycle fatigue post mortem examination and synchrotron X-ray tomography, geometric features of critical defects were acquired and trained. The results showed a high coefficient of determination of 0.99 between predicted and experimental fatigue lives, indicating strong training ability of the SVM model.

Strength uncertainty analysis of composite turbine blade with small sample size

Gaoxiang Chen et al.

Summary: This study established a simplified simulation method to determine the randomness of material behavior in SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composites (CMCs), which exhibit significant randomness of damage processes under load. The reliability and error of the characterization methods were compared with specimens using extreme-value interval, tolerance interval, evidence theory, and fuzzy set method. The randomness of mechanical behavior was more evident at the damage stage, with the uncertainty of material behavior reliant on the loading state.

Summary: This study focuses on the impact of surface damages caused by flying objects on the fatigue performance of high-speed railway axles. Results show that fatigue strength decreases with increase in damage depth, and factors such as damage orientation, shape, and microstructural damage also play a role. Evaluation of fatigue strength reduction is performed based on damage tolerance philosophy in order to assess maintenance needs for these axles.
