The cause of redetachment after vitrectomy with air tamponade for a cohort of 1715 patients with retinal detachment: an analysis of retinal breaks reopening

Summary: This retrospective cohort study investigated the prevalence and predictors of retinal breaks reopening after vitrectomy with air tamponade in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. The study found that 7.99% of patients experienced recurrent detachment, with new or missed retinal breaks and reopening of original tears being the main causes. It was also identified that the presence of retinal breaks ≥ 1.5 disc diameters and a shorter period for restricted activities were independent predictors for breaks reopening.

Stratifying the risk of re-detachment: variables associated with outcome of vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in a large UK cohort study

Summary: This study aimed to identify factors associated with anatomical outcome after vitrectomy and internal tamponade for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. The results showed that age, location and extent of retinal breaks, density of silicone oil, and presence of proliferative vitreoretinopathy were associated with increased risk of failure, while C2F6 tamponade, cryotherapy, and 25 G vitrectomy were associated with reduced risk. The risk stratification model indicated that a large portion of patients are at low or moderate risk of failure.

The efficacy and safety of air tamponade in the repair of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) combined air tamponade compared with gas tamponade in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). The results showed that PPV combined air tamponade is a feasible and safe alternative to the gas tamponade in patients with uncomplicated RRD, regardless of the position of retinal breaks. It has a similar primary treatment success rate, postoperative best-corrected visual acuity, and fewer postoperative complications.

Air versus Gas Tamponade for Primary Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Summary: This study aimed to compare the surgical outcomes between air and gas tamponade after vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). Ten studies involving 2677 eyes were included. The primary anatomical success after vitrectomy was similar between the air and gas groups, but the risk of ocular hypertension was lower in the air group.
