GABAA Receptor and Serotonin Transporter Expression Changes Dissociate Following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: Influence of Sex and Estrus Cycle Phase in Rats

Laura C. Fox et al.

Summary: Mild traumatic brain injuries (mild TBIs) can have different effects on males and females. Females are more likely to experience long-term psychological issues, such as mood changes and generalized anxiety. The reproductive cycle phase can also influence the symptoms experienced by females with mild TBI. These differences may be due to alterations in neurotransmission and sex steroids in brain regions related to mood and emotion. The expression of GABAA receptor and serotonin transporter (SERT) was examined in male and female rats after mild TBI. The results showed that mild TBI affected the expression of GABAA receptor in the amygdala and hippocampus in both sexes, but the direction of change depended on sex and reproductive cycle phase. SERT expression was also found to differ between sexes and vary with the cycle phase. These findings highlight the importance of considering sex differences in mild TBI and may have implications for treatment strategies.

Role of Inflammation in Traumatic Brain Injury-Associated Risk for Neuropsychiatric Disorders: State of the Evidence and Where Do We Go From Here

Victoria B. Risbrough et al.

Summary: In the past decade, there has been increasing awareness of the elevated risk for developing psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and concussion. One potential mechanism for increased neuropsychiatric symptoms after TBI is through inflammatory processes, where central nervous system inflammation can persist for years. Emerging evidence suggests that TBI patients with comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder or depression exhibit higher levels of central and peripheral inflammatory markers compared to those without these conditions. Immune signaling has also been found to play a role in depressive- and anxiety-like behaviors after severe stress or brain injury. This review discusses the evidence for chronic inflammation after TBI in the development of neuropsychiatric symptoms, potential contributions of microglial activation and cytokine signaling, and the promise and challenges of immune-targeted interventions and biomarkers in identifying and treating TBI patients with immune-related neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders following mild traumatic brain injury

Richard L. Delmonico et al.

Summary: This study conducted a cohort study of mTBI cases and matched controls over a 4-year period, finding that affective disorders were more prevalent within the first 12 months after mTBI compared to the control group. Over the following 4 years, patients with prior affective disorders had a higher relative risk of developing affective disorders following mTBI, emphasizing the importance of screening and addressing such disorders early on.

Mental Health Outcomes Across the Lifespan in Individuals With Persistent Post-Concussion Symptoms: A Scoping Review

Elena Sheldrake et al.

Summary: This scoping review aimed to explore the mental health outcomes in individuals experiencing persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS). The review found higher levels of anxiety and/or depression symptoms in PPCS patients. The focus of research differed between pediatric and adult populations. Future studies should consider a wider range of emotional outcomes.
