Reproductive success of jack and full-size males in a wild coho salmon population

Erika M. King et al.

Summary: Despite extensive research on Pacific salmon life histories, little is known about the reproductive success of smaller, immature males (jacks) compared to full-size males. This study examined the reproductive contribution of jacks in a wild population of coho salmon and found that although their individual success was lower, they sired a significant proportion of the population's offspring.

One hundred-seventy years of stressors erode salmon fishery climate resilience in California's warming landscape

Stuart H. Munsch et al.

Summary: This article examines the decline of the salmon fishery in California's Central Valley due to climate change and human actions. It finds that the fishery has lost its climate resilience and emphasizes the importance of protecting complex, less-modified ecosystems for sustainable productivity and ecological services.

Detecting population declines via monitoring the effective number of breeders (Nb)

Gordon Luikart et al.

Summary: Estimating the effective population size and effective number of breeders per year using computer simulations showed a bias of 5%-10% when using SNPs or microsatellites across different species. However, precision was higher for SNPs than for microsatellites, and confidence intervals were narrow enough to achieve high statistical power in rejecting null hypotheses for different true values of N-b and sample sizes.
