Estimate of inbreeding depression on growth and reproductive traits in a Large White pig population

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: With the aim of exploring an appropriate strategy for estimating inbreeding depression in a Large White pig population, this study compared multiple methods for the inbreeding coefficient estimation based on both pedigree and genomic information. The results demonstrated that SNP-based inbreeding coefficients had significant effects on growth and reproductive traits, and runs of homozygosity-based methods showed a slight advantage in the correlation analysis of inbreeding coefficients and estimation of inbreeding depression. Furthermore, a model-based approach (RZooRoH) was found to have good performance on growth traits and reproductive traits, avoiding miscalculations caused by inappropriate parameters. These findings could enhance the application of runs of homozygosity analysis in pig breeding and breed conservation.

A comparison of marker-based estimators of inbreeding and inbreeding depression

Armando Caballero et al.

Summary: This study investigates the accuracy of estimators of inbreeding based on molecular markers in different mating systems and artificially selected populations. The results show that when the allele frequencies of the base population are known, all estimators based on marker allele frequencies provide accurate estimates of inbreeding coefficients and inbreeding depression. When the allele frequencies are unknown, F-LH1 is the most correlated estimator with the actual values, and F-YA2 provides the most accurate estimates of inbreeding depression.

On the estimation of inbreeding depression using different measures of inbreeding from molecular markers

Armando Caballero et al.

Summary: The research investigates the estimation of inbreeding coefficients using molecular marker data and its relationship with inbreeding depression rates. Results show that there are differences in accuracy between the methods based on runs of homozygosity and SNP-by-SNP analysis, with some bias observed in estimates, particularly in large-sized populations.

Genetic Background and Inbreeding Depression in Romosinuano Cattle Breed in Mexico

Jorge Hidalgo et al.

Summary: The goal of genetic selection is to improve genetic progress, but it can lead to inbreeding and accumulation of harmful alleles, reducing genetic diversity. The study on Mexican Romosinuano cattle revealed a decreased effective population size, genetic bottlenecks, and declining genetic diversity as potential challenges.

Long-term exhaustion of the inbreeding load in Drosophila melanogaster

Noelia Perez-Pereira et al.

Summary: Inbreeding depression is caused by the expression of deleterious genes due to inbreeding, and genetic purging removes these harmful genes by expressing them in homozygous state. Results of long-term inbreeding experiments on Drosophila suggest that inbreeding load can be significantly reduced after numerous generations, especially in large populations. This highlights the importance of genetic purging in reducing inbreeding depression.

Genomic signatures of inbreeding in a critically endangered parrot, the kakapo

Yasmin Foster et al.

Summary: Events of inbreeding are inevitable in critically endangered species due to reduced population sizes and unique life-history traits, leading to declines in fitness and increased risk of extinction. Investigating levels of inbreeding in a critically endangered flightless parrot, the kakapo, researchers found correlations between measures of inbreeding and significant differences among descendants of the two founding populations.

How Depressing Is Inbreeding? A Meta-Analysis of 30 Years of Research on the Effects of Inbreeding in Livestock

Harmen P. Doekes et al.

Summary: Inbreeding depression has been documented in livestock populations, with a stronger impact on fitness traits. Studies show that a 1% increase in pedigree inbreeding leads to a median decrease in phenotypic value. SNP-based measures show more power and reliability compared to pedigree-based measures, with no consistent differences observed in different SNP-based measures.

An evaluation of inbreeding measures using a whole-genome sequenced cattle pedigree

Setegn Worku Alemu et al.

Summary: Estimators relying on the correlation between uniting gametes or on genomic relationships presented the highest correlations with variants causing inbreeding depression, while estimators relying on excess homozygosity or homozygous-by-descent segments were better at capturing whole-genome homozygosity. These results suggest that different estimators may be more suitable for different aspects of inbreeding.
