Re-thinking the ecological envelope of Eastern Baltic cod (Gadus morhua): conditions for productivity, reproduction, and feeding over time

Henrik Svedang et al.

Summary: Hypoxia is seen as the main factor behind the decline of the Eastern Baltic cod stock, but it is not the direct cause of the decline in EBC productivity. Over the past 60 years, hydrographic conditions in the Bornholm Basin have remained unchanged, while spawning conditions deteriorated in the Gotland Deep due to hypoxia. Additionally, in the past 30 years, well-oxygenated and potentially suitable feeding areas for EBC remain abundant in various parts of the Baltic Sea.

Stabilizing selection on Atlantic cod supergenes through a millennium of extensive exploitation

Marte Sodeland et al.

Summary: Life on Earth has experienced cycles of ecological stasis and disruption, linking biological and geological transitions. Human influences have caused increasing ecological disruption, leading some to argue that we are now in the Anthropocene era. Understanding the drivers of ecological stasis is crucial for intervention and mitigation. The Atlantic cod, a keystone species in the northern Atlantic Ocean, has experienced collapses and ecosystem reshuffling. Whole-genome resequencing revealed that stabilizing selection maintains three supergenes in Atlantic cod, which are linked to species persistence and ecological stasis. Historic population size inference indicates continued declines due to industrialization and commercialization of fisheries.

Living apart together: Long-term coexistence of Baltic cod stocks associated with depthspecific habitat use

Franziska Maria Schade et al.

Summary: In the Baltic Sea, genetically divergent stocks of Atlantic cod, Western Baltic cod (WBC) and Eastern Baltic cod (EBC), coexist in the Arkona Sea. This study used otolith shape analysis to develop a comprehensive time series of stock mixing data for WBC and EBC. The results showed that the two stocks coexist in the Arkona Sea with fluctuating mixing proportions over time. Depth-stratified analysis revealed stable differences in depth distribution and habitat use of WBC and EBC, which may contribute to their long-term coexistence. Fishing gear-specific exploitation of different stocks was observed, emphasizing the importance of considering capture depth and gear type in stock assessments.

Multidecadal changes in fish growth rates estimated from tagging data: A case study from the Eastern Baltic cod (Gadus morhua, Gadidae)

Monica Mion et al.

Summary: This study used tagging data to analyze the growth changes of Eastern Baltic cod and found significant variations in growth rates over the past decades, with the current growth being the lowest observed in the past 70 years, indicating very low productivity. This study demonstrates the potential of using tagging data to estimate long-term changes in growth rates in wild fish, with implications for other species facing age-determination challenges.

Genomic stability through time despite decades of in cod on both sides of the Atlantic

Malin L. Pinsky et al.

Summary: This study compared whole-genome sequence data of Atlantic cod from two geographically distinct populations and found that genetic diversity did not substantially decline and effective population sizes remained high after periods of intensive exploitation and rapid decline. The research suggests that phenotypic change in these populations is not constrained by irreversible loss of genomic variation.

Historical Demographic Processes Dominate Genetic Variation in Ancient Atlantic Cod Mitogenomes

Lourdes Martinez-Garcia et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic diversity of ancient and modern Atlantic cod populations, finding little evidence of significant mitogenomic changes over time. The results suggest that historical events and gene flow play a key role in shaping the mitogenomic variation in Atlantic cod, while anthropogenic pressures such as commercial fisheries have minimal impact on genetic diversity.
