Evaluation of the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) tool as a predictor of postoperative complications following major oncological abdominal surgery in geriatric patients

Yoon Penning et al.

Summary: The concept of frailty extends beyond chronological age. Using a two-step approach of screening with the G8 tool followed by comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) can guide treatment decisions and follow-up for oncogeriatric patients. This study found an association between G8 scores and CGA results, as well as the risk of postoperative complications. Identifying altered preoperative nutritional status can help optimize treatment decision making and improve outcomes.

Comprehensive geriatric assessment as a useful tool in predicting adverse events in elderly patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma

Toshihiro Tanaka et al.

Summary: A comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) may be a useful tool for predicting serious adverse events (AEs) associated with chemotherapy in elderly patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). According to this study, impairment of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) in the CGA was independently associated with severe leukopenia and anemia. The presence of comorbidity was also associated with severe non-hematological toxicity. Additionally, the independent group tended to have a longer survival rate.

Comprehensive geriatric assessment for older orthopedic patients and analysis of risk factors for postoperative complications

Chao Kong et al.

Summary: This study applied a novel comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) strategy to evaluate older patients undergoing orthopedic surgery comprehensively and identify potential risk factors for postoperative complications. The study found that spinal fusion, blood loss, poor activities of daily living (ADL), significant dependence in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), poor renal function, and malnutrition were independent risk factors for postoperative complications in older orthopedic surgery patients.

Aging tsunami coming: the main finding from China's seventh national population census

Wen-Jun Tu et al.

Summary: The seventh national population census reveals an increase in China's total population, a growing proportion of elderly population, improvements in the percentage of individuals with college educations, and a decrease in illiteracy rates. In the next decade, China will face further changes and will need to adjust policies to adapt to the shifting demographic landscape.

Perioperative Optimization of Senior Health in Spine Surgery: Impact on Postoperative Delirium

Summary: This study suggests that interdisciplinary care for high-risk geriatric patients undergoing elective spine surgery may reduce the incidence of postoperative delirium and increase provider recognition of delirium. The benefit may be greater for those undergoing larger procedures.

Summary: Osteoporosis is just a part of renal bone diseases, and the terminology may impact diagnostic and treatment decisions. Due to the current inability to accurately distinguish osteoporosis from other forms of kidney-associated bone diseases, further research and exploration of new treatment strategies are needed.

Predicting Myocardial Injury and Other Cardiac Complications After Elective Noncardiac Surgery with the Revised Cardiac Risk Index: The VISION Study

Pavel S. Roshanov et al.

Summary: The Revised Cardiac Risk Index (RCRI) may not accurately predict cardiac complications after noncardiac surgery, as the incidence of these complications can vary across different RCRI risk classes. A significant percentage of older patients undergoing major noncardiac surgery may experience cardiac complications even without any RCRI risk factors, highlighting the limitations of relying solely on RCRI for postoperative monitoring.

Charlson comorbidity index is predictive of postoperative clinical outcome after single-level posterior lumbar interbody fusion surgery

Kensuke Shinonara et al.

Summary: The study found a weak negative relationship between CCI score and JOA improvement rate, with patients with two or more comorbidities showing a significantly higher recovery rate compared to those without comorbidities. However, CCI score did not influence length of stay (LOS) and increased direct costs. Surgeons should consider a patient's comorbidities when planning a surgical intervention to achieve a good clinical outcome.

A prospective comparative study of the MNA-SF and GNRI nutritional screening tools in predicting infectious complications among elderly patients over 70 years undergoing posterior lumbar arthrodesis

Summary: In elderly patients undergoing posterior lumbar arthrodesis, malnutrition is a significant risk factor for infectious complications. The Mini Nutritional Assessment short form (MNA-SF) is a simple and effective tool for predicting the risk of infections in these patients, outperforming the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) in terms of accuracy.
