Bahiru Punja Benke et al.

Summary: This study presents a new method to induce catenation by adding methoxy or thiomethyl groups to one of the precursors during the synthesis of chiral organic cages. The catenation is mainly driven by weak interactions derived from the substituents rather than pi-stacking. The study sheds light on the formation of catenated structures beyond macrocycles.

Fast-Reprocessing, Postadjustable, Self-Healing Covalent Adaptable Networks with Schiff Base and Diels-Alder Adduct

Xiwei Xu et al.

Summary: A method of combining Schiff base and Diels-Alder adduct in one network is developed for the first time to achieve rapid reprocessing and postadjusting of covalent adaptable networks (CANs). The dissociation of the Diels-Alder adduct at high temperatures reduces the cross-link densities of the networks, thereby accelerating the rearrangement of the networks and realizing rapid reprocessing and self-healing. The reconnecting degree of the network after dissociation of the Diels-Alder adduct can be easily controlled by annealing, allowing for postadjustment of the properties of the obtained CANs.

Rapid Stress Relaxation, Multistimuli-Responsive Elastomer Based on Dual-Dynamic Covalent Bonds and Aniline Trimer

Zhiyong Liu et al.

Summary: This article presents a new type of smart material called covalent adaptable networks (CANs), which have reversible cross-links and can provide malleability and stimuli-responsive ability. By incorporating dual-dynamic covalent bonds and aniline trimer (ACAT) into the styrene butadiene elastomer as dynamic crosslinks, CANs with rapid stress relaxation and low activation energy were obtained. The material can be recycled and its appearance and configuration can be manipulated by pH and light due to the dynamic nature of imines or boronic esters and the inclusion of ACAT. The coupled multistimuli-responsive behavior and rapid stress relaxation in one single elastomer make it potentially suitable for sensors and actuators with good recyclability.
