Polymeric nanocomposites based on high aspect ratio polymer fillers: Simultaneous improvement in tensile strength and stretchability

Fumi Ishizuka et al.

Summary: Polymer worms synthesized via polymerization induced self-assembly (PISA) can improve the mechanical properties of polymer nanocomposite films at low loading, and the glass transition temperature (T-g) of the core-forming block plays an important role for effective reinforcement.

Polymeric Nanofibers of Various Degrees of Cross-Linking as Fillers in Poly(styrene-stat-n-butyl acrylate) Nanocomposites: Overcoming the Trade-Off between Tensile Strength and Stretchability

Hyun Jin Kim et al.

Summary: The synthesis of high-strength and tough polymer nanocomposites has attracted significant interest for industrial applications. In this study, the authors successfully synthesized polymer nanocomposites reinforced with nanodimensional polymeric worms using a simple and environmentally friendly synthesis process. The results showed that the cross-linking of the core-segments significantly influenced the reinforcement efficiency. This research expands the understanding of using PISA-derived worms as reinforcing fillers.

Long-Term Stability of Pickering Nanoemulsions Prepared Using Diblock Copolymer Nanoparticles: Effect of Nanoparticle Core Crosslinking, Oil Type, and the Role Played by Excess Copolymers

Saul J. Hunter et al.

Summary: In this study, PDMAC(77)-PDAAM(40) spherical nanoparticles were prepared via RAFT aqueous dispersion polymerization and subsequently subjected to core-crosslinking to form covalently stabilized nanoparticles. The resulting Pickering nanoemulsions exhibited smaller droplet sizes and superior long-term stability.

Synthesis of High Molecular Weight Water-Soluble Polymers as Low-Viscosity Latex Particles by RAFT Aqueous Dispersion Polymerization in Highly Salty Media

Rory J. McBride et al.

Summary: Sterically-stabilized diblock copolymer particles were synthesized via RAFT aqueous dispersion polymerization in highly salty media, achieving high conversion rates and blocking efficiencies for the salt-insoluble PDMAC block. The use of a zwitterionic water-soluble polymer as a precursor block enabled the formation of PDMAC-core particles with high DP in a turbid dispersion system. The study demonstrated the potential for high molecular weight water-soluble polymers to be prepared conveniently in a low-viscosity form using this new PISA formulation.

Nano-dimensional spheres and worms as fillers in polymer nanocomposites: effect of filler morphology

Fumi Ishizuka et al.

Summary: Polymeric nanofillers based on poly(methyl methacrylate) are prepared using polymerization induced self-assembly (PISA) method. Nano-dimensional spheres and worms are used to reinforce polymer nanocomposite films to study the effects of filler morphology and crosslinking. It is found that crosslinked worm reinforced films exhibit significant improvement in mechanical properties.
