Multiphoton Lithography as a Promising Tool for Biomedical Applications

Coralie Greant et al.

Summary: Multiphoton lithography (MPL) is a powerful and useful tool for creating complex 2D and 3D micro- and nanostructures with high spatial resolution. This technology has gained significant interest in tissue engineering and medical device manufacturing due to its ability to generate sophisticated structures not achievable through traditional printing methods. This review discusses the use of two-photon photoinitiators (PIs) and photoreactive biomaterials in biomedical applications and provides an overview of MPL's applications in tissue engineering, biomedical devices, and photodynamic therapy.

Tough Photo-Cross-Linked PCL-Hydroxyapatite Composites for Bone Tissue Engineering

Quinten Thijssen et al.

Summary: In this study, the thiol-ene click reaction was introduced for the first time to improve the elongation and strength of PCL composites by photo-cross-linking them with HAp nanoparticles. The results showed that the thiol-ene cross-linking mechanism significantly increased the elongation and strength of the composites. Furthermore, osteoblasts were able to attach and proliferate on the surface of the photo-cross-linked PCL-HAp composites.

Study on Mechanical Properties of Polycaprolactone Modified Cement-Based Material

Hai-feng Lu et al.

Summary: With the continuous development of the economy, engineering construction is expanding into deep high-stress areas, resulting in increasingly severe issues with large-deformation engineering. Anchoring grouting is an effective support reinforcement method, with cement paste and cement mortar being the main materials used. The characteristics of the grouting materials have a significant impact on the grouting effect. However, current grouting materials struggle to meet the requirements for both strength and deformation, necessitating improvements. This study innovatively adds polycaprolactone (PCL), an organic polymer material with excellent engineering properties, including high ductility, good stability, and strong impact resistance, as an auxiliary additive to cement-based materials. Mechanical and micro tests were conducted on PCL-cement-based materials, showing that adding PCL can significantly increase compressive strength of cement paste, and adjusting PCL content effectively improves the strength and ductility of cement mortar, with an optimal high-performance cement mortar material achieved at a PCL content of 15%. Anchor grouting proves to be a highly effective reinforcement and support method.

Biomimetic and mechanically supportive 3D printed scaffolds for cartilage and osteochondral tissue engineering using photopolymers and digital light processing

Sarah A. Schoonraad et al.

Summary: Successful 3D scaffold designs for musculoskeletal tissue engineering require careful consideration of tissue form and function. This study presents a method that separates mechanical and biochemical needs, allowing for independent development of structural and cellular niches in scaffolds. Using digital light processing-based stereolithography, complex structures with varied porosities and moduli are achieved, filled with mesenchymal stem cells and biomimetic hydrogels for guided tissue differentiation. This approach demonstrates the potential to repair chondral defects and support multi-tissue scaffold development for osteochondral tissue engineering.
