Synthesis and performance of a novel polycarboxylate superplasticizer through grafting the β-cyclodextrin on the side chain by click reaction

Bin Li et al.

Summary: A novel monovinyl beta-cyclodextrin monomer was used to synthesize polycarboxylate superplasticizers, with beta-cyclodextrin grafted on the end of the side chain. The inclusion of beta-cyclodextrin in the superplasticizer resulted in improved fluidity, fluidity retention performance, and shorter setting time compared to superplasticizers with polyoxyethylene side chains only.

Effect of molecular structure of maleic anhydride, fumaric acid - Isopentenyl polyoxyethylene ether based polycarboxylate superplasticizer on its properties in cement pastes

Shengnan Sha et al.

Summary: Different molecular structures of PCE were synthesized by copolymerizing MAH and FA, with FA-PCE showing higher density of -COO- groups and better adsorption, retardation, and dispersion properties. Interactions between -COO- groups and Ca2+ in FA-PCE were dominated by intermolecular chelation, leading to stronger dispersion efficiency in cement pastes.

Comparative study of PCE superplasticizers with different anchoring groups in low water-to-binder ratio cementitious material

Shengnan Sha et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the density and configuration of anchoring groups in Polycarboxylate Ether (PCE) superplasticizers significantly influence their adsorption behavior and dispersibility in cementitious pastes. Specifically, FA-PCE with a large specific charge density shows excellent flowability and rheological properties in cementitious pastes.

Summary: Polyether macromonomers with diversified structures were used to synthesize a series of polycarboxylate superplasticizers (PCEs) in this study. By modifying the molecular structures, the PCEs showed enhanced adsorption ability and dispersion capacity in mortar. The results indicate potential for further application of EPEG macromonomer.

Working Mechanisms and Design Principles of Comb-like Polycarboxylate Ether Superplasticizers in Cement Hydration: Quantitative Insights for a Series of Well-Defined Copolymers

Ali Javadi et al.

Summary: Research has identified quantitative correlations between the structure of PCE copolymers and their adsorption onto cement pastes, as well as their impact on properties such as conductivity and hydration process of cement. The study also found that the ionic character of the polymer backbone and the length of non-ionic PEG side chains play a role in the flow properties of cement pastes and the water-to-cement ratio necessary for processing. This new understanding provides insights into the rational design of polymer additives for cement.
