Ultrafast and facile construction of programmable, multidimensional wrinkled-patterned polyacrylamide/sodium alginate hydrogels for human skin-like tactile perception

Jianhua Huang et al.

Summary: Customizable structures and patterns are powerful tools for biomimetic design and application of soft materials. The construction of long-range ordered self-wrinkled structures on complex-shaped surfaces still faces challenges. A flexible strategy involving the coordination between carboxyl groups and Fe3+ enables the formation of a wrinkled surface with well-organized microstructure and controllable dimensions. The self-wrinkled hydrogel exhibits high sensitivity and can be applied to tactile perception and monitoring of human body movements.

Underwater and wet adhesion strategies for hydrogels in biomedical applications

Ho Yin Yuen et al.

Summary: Hydrogel is a versatile and biocompatible biomaterial widely used in tissue engineering. Its ability to adhere in wet and underwater conditions is crucial for biomedical applications. Various strategies, such as catechol adhesion and hydrophobic modification, have been explored to enhance the adhesiveness of hydrogels. In this review, we summarize the factors influencing wet and underwater adhesion, discuss the differences among common clinical scenarios, and analyze the current trends and potential improvements in commercialized hydrogels. We also explore how enhanced adhesiveness can benefit hydrogel applications. Overall, this review provides a holistic view on the role of adhesion strategies in different biomedical applications, aiding in identifying actionable clinical scenarios for wet and underwater adhesive hydrogels.

Surface Wrinkling for Flexible and Stretchable Sensors

Giwon Lee et al.

Summary: Recent advances in nanolithography, miniaturization, and material science, along with developments in wearable electronics, have pushed sensor technology to fabricate highly sensitive, flexible, stretchable, and multimodal detection systems. Surface wrinkling, as an effective alternative, improves the sensing performance and mechanical deformability of flexible and stretchable sensors by releasing stress, preventing failure, and enlarging surface areas. This study discusses the recent developments in wrinkling structures for sensor applications, including the mechanics, geometry control, and fabricating methods. It reviews the current state and impact on various sensor types, such as strain, pressure, temperature, chemical, photodetectors, and multimodal sensors. The study also extrapolates the existing wrinkling approaches, designs, and sensing strategies into future applications.

Inter/intramolecular hydrogen bonding mediate miscible blend formation between near-perfect alternating Poly(styrene-alt-hydroxyphenylmaleimide) copolymers and Poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)

Wei-Ting Du et al.

Summary: Two isomeric hydroxyphenylmaleimide (HPMI) monomers were synthesized and copolymerized with styrene to form two near-perfect alternating copolymers. Characterization using various techniques revealed differences in hydrogen bonding interactions between oHPMI and PVP compared to pHPMI, leading to weaker interactions between oHPMI and PVP.

Thermoresponsive microwrinkled hydrogel surfaces with modulated chemical composition

Carmen M. Gonzalez-Henriquez et al.

Summary: Smart wrinkled hydrogel patterns with modulated chemical composition and wrinkle characteristics were formed using a simple, cost-affordable method that takes advantage of surface instabilities. The surfaces were designed to be stimuli-responsive by introducing specific molecules, resulting in reproducible coatings with thermosensitive wrinkles. Vacuum and UV irradiation were used to induce the formation of wrinkled patterns, revealing variations in film properties depending on temperature. This deposition strategy not only offers simplicity but also allows for highly reproducible films with potential industrial applications.
