Decreased Brain GABA Levels in Patients with Migraine Without Aura: An Exploratory Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Study

Xiaojuan Wu et al.

Summary: Neurophysiological studies have shown that regional excitation-inhibition imbalance in the brain plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of migraine. This study aimed to investigate the changes in gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate/glutamine complex (Glx) levels in specific brain regions of patients with migraine without aura (MWoA) and their correlation with clinical indicators. The results revealed significantly lower GABA levels in the anterior cingulate gyrus (ACC) and medial prefrontal lobe (mPFC) of MWoA patients compared to healthy controls, with no significant difference in Glx levels. Negative correlations were found between GABA levels and attack frequency in the ACC and mPFC regions. These findings suggest a close relationship between abnormalities in GABAergic neurons in the ACC and mPFC and the pathophysiological mechanisms of MWoA.

Reduced GABA levels in the medial prefrontal cortex are associated with cognitive impairment in patients with NMOSD

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with NMOSD had decreased GABA+ levels in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and these levels were correlated with cognitive dysfunction. This may be a potential metabolic feature of cognitive decline in patients with NMOSD.

Elevated GABA level in the precuneus and its association with pain intensity in patients with postherpetic neuralgia: An initial proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy study

Xiaojuan Wu et al.

Summary: This study found that PHN patients had higher GABA+/tCr levels in the precuneus compared to healthy controls, and these levels were positively correlated with pain intensity, suggesting a key role of abnormalities in regional GABAergic neurons in the pathophysiological mechanisms of pain in PHN.

Effects of repeated menstrual pain on empathic neural responses in women with primary dysmenorrhea across the menstrual cycle

Chen Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the brain activity in PDM women when viewing pictures of painful situations differs from healthy controls, primarily showing increased activation in the anterior insula, anterior cingulate cortex, and left inferior parietal lobule. Additionally, the right insula activation was less pronounced in PDM women viewing pain pictures compared to healthy controls.

The effects of long-term menstrual pain on pain empathy in women with primary dysmenorrhea

Junya Mu et al.

Summary: Primary dysmenorrhea not only causes physical pain, but also affects the psychological and emotional states of women. Research suggests that women with primary dysmenorrhea exhibit higher pain empathy and long-term pain may lead to maladaptive brain structural plasticity, impacting emotional regulation.

Altered in vivo brain GABA and glutamate levels are associated with multiple sclerosis central fatigue

Jameen Arm et al.

Summary: This study revealed that fatigue in patients with relapse remitting multiple sclerosis is associated with alterations in GABA and Glx levels in different brain regions, indicating a potential dysregulation of GABAergic and glutamatergic neurotransmission in the pathophysiological mechanism of central fatigue in MS.

Disruption to normal excitatory and inhibitory function within the medial prefrontal cortex in people with chronic pain

David Kang et al.

Summary: This study reveals a significant reduction in gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA(+)) and glutamate levels within the medial prefrontal cortex in chronic pain sufferers, supporting the hypothesis that chronic pain is associated with altered medial prefrontal biochemistry. The disruption to normal excitatory and inhibitory medial prefrontal cortex function may be key in the development and maintenance of chronic pain and comorbid mental health disorders, although the findings should be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size.
