Frequency, intensity and duration of muscle strengthening activity and associations with mental health

Stephen Shannon et al.

Summary: This study examined the associations between frequency, intensity, and duration of muscle-strengthening activities and anxiety, depression, and mental well-being. The results showed that engaging in muscle-strengthening activities for three or more days was associated with fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression. Higher intensity of activities was also associated with lower levels of anxiety and depression. However, adherence to the muscle-strengthening guidelines and the duration of activities did not significantly predict mental health outcomes.

Trajectories of team and individual sports participation in childhood and links with internalizing problems

Charles-Etienne White-Gosselin et al.

Summary: The purpose of this 5-year longitudinal study is to identify trajectories of team and individual sports participation in childhood and compare the impact of these trajectories on internalizing problems. The results indicate that children who participate in team sports have fewer depression, anxiety, and social withdrawal behaviors compared to those with low team sports participation. However, individual sports participation did not show significant effects on internalizing problems. Additionally, sustained participation in individual sports was associated with decreased anxiety.

Physical Inactivity From Childhood to Adolescence and Incident Depression

Larissa Redig et al.

Summary: This study examines the association between physical activity during childhood and adolescence and the incidence of depressive symptoms in early, middle, and late adulthood. The results suggest that being physically active at age 16 reduces the risk of depressive symptoms throughout adulthood, with the effect persisting up to age 62.

Trajectories of 24-h movement guidelines from middle adolescence to adulthood on depression and suicidal ideation: a 22-year follow-up study

Antonio Garcia-Hermoso et al.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between the 24-hour movement guidelines in adolescence and depression and suicidal ideation in adulthood. The results showed that adolescents who met physical activity guidelines and all three guidelines in middle adolescence had a lower risk of depression and suicidal ideation in adulthood. Individuals who met the guidelines for screen time and all three guidelines in both adolescence and adulthood also had a lower risk. Additionally, individuals who did not meet all three guidelines in adolescence but met them in adulthood had a lower risk of suicidal ideation. These findings highlight the importance of promoting and adhering to the 24-hour movement guidelines from adolescence to adulthood to prevent mental health problems.

Philip Hyland et al.

Summary: Research in Ireland found that the prevalence of major depression and generalized anxiety disorder did not increase significantly as a result of or during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. There were no significant changes in depression and GAD during the nationwide lockdown period as well. Factors predicting major depression and GAD included younger age, non-city dwelling, lower resilience, higher loneliness, and several COVID-19 specific variables.
