Treatment-resistant OCD: Pharmacotherapies in adults

Peter J. van Roessel et al.

Summary: Serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI) medications are the first-line pharmacotherapeutic treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), but a substantial proportion of patients do not respond well to these medications. This review discusses the clinical features associated with poor response to SRIs and presents alternative therapies for treatment-resistant OCD. Pharmacotherapies targeting various neurotransmitter systems and anti-inflammatory pathways have shown preliminary evidence of efficacy.

Neuroprotective Effects of Lactobacillus plantarum PS128 in a Mouse Model of Parkinson's Disease: The Role of Gut Microbiota and MicroRNAs

Yan Zhang Lee et al.

Summary: This study found that administration of Lactobacillus plantarum PS128 significantly improved motor deficits in a rotenone-induced Parkinson's disease mouse model. PS128 increased dopamine levels, reduced dopaminergic neuron loss and microglial activation, decreased inflammatory factors, and enhanced the expression of neurotrophic factors in the brain. Furthermore, PS128 restored the altered fecal microbiota and regulated the miR-155-5p/SOCS1 pathway, thereby exerting neuroprotective effects.

Associations of neurotransmitters and the gut microbiome with emotional distress in mixed type of irritable bowel syndrome

Zahra A. Barandouzi et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests a comorbidity between emotional distress and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) through the gut-brain axis. This study aimed to investigate the associations among neurotransmitter levels and gut microbiome profiles in individuals with IBS and emotional distress. The results showed significant differences in emotional distress and microbiome profiles between the IBS and healthy control groups, with lower levels of neurotransmitters observed in the IBS group. Additionally, correlations were found between neurotransmitter levels and specific microbial taxa.

TrpNet: Understanding Tryptophan Metabolism across Gut Microbiome

Yao Lu et al.

Summary: The interaction between the gut microbiome and the host is important for animal development and health. Small compounds, such as tryptophan metabolites, play a key role in this interaction. However, the origin and specific metabolic pathways of tryptophan metabolites are not well understood. TrpNet is a comprehensive database and analytics platform that focuses on tryptophan metabolism in the context of host and gut microbiome interactions.

Multi-strain Probiotic Formulation Reverses Maternal Separation and Chronic Unpredictable Mild Stress-Generated Anxiety- and Depression-like Phenotypes by Modulating Gut Microbiome-Brain Activity in Rats

Manoj P. Dandekar et al.

Summary: Depression is a debilitating mental disorder affecting over 322 million people globally, with many patients being refractory to current antidepressant treatments. Recent literature suggests a possible role of gut microbiota in neuropsychiatric disorders. A study on Sprague-Dawley rats found that a multi-strain probiotic formulation showed potential in alleviating anxiety and depression-like phenotypes induced by early- and late-life stress.

The Intervention of Prebiotics on Depression via the Gut-Brain Axis

Qinghui He et al.

Summary: The imbalance of intestinal microbiota has a significant impact on human health, and the gut-brain axis plays a crucial role in improving depressive symptoms. Prebiotics such as plant polysaccharides and polyphenols can modulate the intestinal microbiota, offering potential for the prevention and treatment of depression.

Remodeling of microbiota gut-brain axis using psychobiotics in depression

Mani Surya Kumar Palepu et al.

Summary: Depression is a complex disorder involving various systems, including neuroendocrine, neurochemical, immune, and metabolic systems. Recent studies have shown the significant connection between gut microbiota and central nervous system disorders. Understanding the new mechanisms underlying the interaction between gut microbiota and the brain is important for depression management. Restoring gut microbiota with methods like using prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics, synbiotics, and fermented foods has gained attention as a promising approach for depression treatment. Furthermore, evidence suggests the role of gut microbiota in the treatment of resistant depression. Therefore, remodeling the microbiota-gut-brain axis using psychobiotics is a potential therapeutic strategy for reversing psychiatric disorders, and investigating the underlying mechanisms for gut-brain crosstalk is imperative.

Summary: Heat-killed Lactobacillus plantarum 200655 has been found to increase levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and protect neuronal cells from oxidative stress, while also reducing apoptosis-related gene ratios. These findings suggest that L. plantarum 200655 may serve as a prophylactic functional ingredient for preventing neurodegenerative diseases.

Crosstalk between gut microbiome and immunology in the management of ischemic brain injury

Ziaur Rahman et al.

Summary: This article discusses the connection between gut microbiota and the host immune system, and how changes in their interaction can affect the incidence of stroke and post-injury neurological issues. The activation of inflammatory cells can lead to systemic inflammation, blood brain barrier disruption, and aggravation of ischemic brain injury. Fine-tuning gut microbiota may help regulate the activation of resident cells in the central nervous system.

Summary: The study indicates that probiotic supplementation can alleviate stress and anxiety by modulating gut microbiota, increasing microbial diversity, and influencing the levels of beneficial and harmful bacterial species in the gut. Additionally, probiotics also enhance the production of neurotransmitter-synthesizing/consuming species and neuroactive metabolites, supporting the involvement of the gut-brain axis in relieving stress-related symptoms.

Summary: Recent H-1-MRS studies have found abnormal levels of glutamate and gamma aminobutyric acid in the brains of OCD patients, potentially related to hyperactivation in cortico-striatal circuits. The study identified decreased Glu/Cr concentrations in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex of OCD patients, indicating an imbalance in excitatory neurotransmission.

Depression and anxiety in patients with active ulcerative colitis: crosstalk of gut microbiota, metabolomics and proteomics

Summary: Patients with active ulcerative colitis often suffer from depression and anxiety, which are related to gut microbiota imbalance and disturbed metabolism. This study found that patients with UC and depression/anxiety had lower fecal microbial community richness and diversity, as well as alterations in serum metabolites and proteins. Prophylactic administration of certain metabolites significantly reduced depressive-like behaviors in colitis mice, showing the potential for clinical intervention in patients with UC and depression/anxiety.
