Enantioselective Catalysis by the Umpolung of Conjugate Acceptors Involving N-Heterocyclic Carbene or Organophosphine 1,4-Addition

Yuji Nakano et al.

Summary: Conjugate acceptors are commonly used electrophilic functional groups in organic synthesis. Our research focuses on their ability to undergo polarity inversion through the conjugate addition of Lewis base catalysts. We have achieved cycloisomerizations and annulation reactions using simple conjugate acceptors and those embedded within more complicated substrates. However, significant challenges remain to be addressed before a universal approach to polarity inversion of all conjugate acceptors can be achieved.

Exploring a general mechanistic map on NHC-catalyzed activation/transformation reactions of saturated carboxylic anhydrides

Shuang-Liang Liu et al.

Summary: A general mechanistic map has been proposed and studied for NHC-catalyzed transformation reactions of saturated carboxylic anhydrides, predicting the origin of chemo- and stereo-selectivities. The fundamental pathway of this reaction includes processes such as C-O bond cleavage, alpha-H elimination, beta-H elimination, functionalization with benzylidene diketone, acyl migration, aldol addition, catalyst dissociation, and decarboxylation. The chemoselectivities in other pathways and the stereoselectivity-determining step have also been investigated.

Decarbonylative Issues Involved in Ru(II)-catalyzed [6+2-1] Annulation Reaction of Hydroxychromone with Alkyne: A DFT Study

Baoping Ling et al.

Summary: Density functional theory calculations were used to explore the Ru-catalyzed decarbonylative annulation reaction, revealing a Ru(II)-Ru(0)-Ru(II) transformation. The oxidative addition of C(carbonyl)-C(carbonyl) bond to Ru(0) was found to be favorable, while the regeneration of the catalyst was predicted to be achieved by the oxidation of air oxygen. This study provides new insights into the decarbonylative annulation.
