Analytics for IoT-Enabled Human-Robot Hybrid Sortation: An Online Optimization Approach

Ye Shi et al.

Summary: This study explores the deployment of IoT technology in a human-robot hybrid sortation system to improve efficiency. By analyzing a real-life dataset, the study finds that IoT technology can alleviate the congestion effect caused by increasing parcel flow on robotic sorting efficiency. An online algorithm is designed using advance IoT information to adjust manual capacity effectively, and simulation experiments demonstrate its superiority over current policies and conventional programs.

Optimal Picking Policies in E-Commerce Warehouses

Maximilian Schiffer et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on optimizing picker routing in e-commerce warehouses using a mixed-shelves concept and various picking policies. The study reveals that the right combination of drop-off points, dynamic batching, picking cart utilization, and picking zone layout can greatly improve picking performance, with efficiency increases of more than 30% compared to standard policies.

Supplier Menus for Dynamic Matching in Peer-to-Peer Transportation Platforms

Rosemonde Ausseil et al.

Summary: Peer-to-peer transportation platforms use menu selection to mitigate selection uncertainty. The study presents a multiple scenario approach that combines different solutions by sampling supplier selections, solving two-stage decision problems, and using a consensus algorithm to generate menus with the entire system in mind. This method outperforms benchmark policies.

Assignment of parcels to loading stations in robotic sorting systems

Xianhao Xu et al.

Summary: This article introduces a warehouse sorting system based on autonomous robots. By optimizing the assignment of arriving parcels to loading stations, the system throughput time is minimized. The research first establishes a queuing network to estimate system performance, then uses an integer programming model for solution, and designs a Tabu search algorithm. Numerical experiments and a real case study validate the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Robotic Sorting Systems: Performance Estimation and Operating Policies Analysis

Bipan Zou et al.

Summary: The study investigated two layouts of robotic sorting systems, with different robot-to-loading-station assignment rules. Results showed that system throughput capacity is significantly impacted by factors such as robot congestion, layout topology, and assignment rules. The analysis also suggested that robotic sorting systems typically have lower overall annual cost compared to traditional systems for small to medium scale operations.
