Reproducible Microstructural Changes in the Brain Associated With the Presence and Severity of Urologic Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (UCPPS): A 3-Year Longitudinal Diffusion Tensor Imaging Study From the MAPP Network

Chencai Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that alterations in white matter microstructure may be associated with persistent pain symptoms in urologic chronic pelvic pain syndrome (UCPPS). The results showed consistent aberrations in mean diffusivity (MD) between UCPPS patients and healthy controls, while fractional anisotropy (FA) differences were unique at baseline and 6-month follow-up visits. Furthermore, abnormal microstructural connectivity was observed in specific brain regions involved in sensory processing and pain modulation.

Insights into human cerebral white matter maturation and degeneration across the adult lifespan

Matthew Kiely et al.

Summary: This study evaluated sex and age-related differences in white matter microstructure using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The results showed that myelin content and axonal density in white matter exhibited nonlinear changes with age, and the posterior white matter regions were more preserved from neurodegeneration compared to anterior regions. Additionally, DTI indices were moderately correlated with myelin content, indicating their sensitivity to other constituents of white matter tissue.

Potential Pitfalls of Using Fractional Anisotropy, Axial Diffusivity, and Radial Diffusivity as Biomarkers of Cerebral White Matter Microstructure

Chase R. Figley et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the limitations of several commonly used MRI biomarkers in diffusion imaging studies and suggests that future research should refrain from over-interpreting FA, AD, and RD values as standalone markers of cerebral white matter microstructure.

Sex is a defining feature of neuroimaging phenotypes in major brain disorders

Lauren E. Salminen et al.

Summary: Sex differences play a significant role in individual variability in brain structure and behavior. Studies have shown normative differences in brain structure between males and females, which are exacerbated in psychiatric and neurological conditions. However, research on sex differences in MRI outcomes, especially in clinical samples with known differences in disease risk and prevalence, is still limited.

Cerebral White Matter Alterations Revealed by Multiple Diffusion Metrics in Cervical Spondylotic Patients with Pain: A TBSS Study

Dan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated white matter alterations in cervical spondylotic patients with pain and their associations with clinical variables. The results showed decreased fractional anisotropy (FA) and increased mean diffusivity (MD) and radial diffusivity (RD) in multiple white matter regions of these patients. Furthermore, certain DTI metrics were found to have moderate relationships with the severity of pain. These findings provide alternative imaging clues for evaluating the pathophysiological characteristics of cervical spondylotic pain.

Advances in Non-Invasive Neuromodulation

Brian Brenner et al.

Summary: Neuromodulation, as a method for treating chronic pain, shows potential and promising future. Current literature suggests that non-invasive neuromodulation techniques have utility in treating different types of chronic pain. There is a better understanding of the mechanisms and technological improvements in pain relief from neuromodulation.

Oral pharmacological treatments for chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome: A systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

Zongshi Qin et al.

Summary: There is a lack of quantitative comparative effectiveness and safety evidence for pharmacological treatments for chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS). Only a small amount of low-quality evidence supports the efficacy of some pharmacological treatments. Future studies should personalize therapy based on specific symptoms and explore non-pharmacological targets for CP/CPPS.

Summary: By studying the white matter brain networks of patients with Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS), it was found that alterations in brain connectivity may be related to executive control processing procedures, potentially contributing to the pathogenesis of the symptoms.

Daniel D. Callow et al.

Summary: Exercise training may improve verbal fluency performance in older adults through microstructural remodeling of cortical gray matter. Changes in left insular cortex microstructure may be particularly relevant to improvements in verbal fluency among individuals diagnosed with MCI.
