DRAWING MUSCLES WITH DIAGRAMS: HOW A NOVEL DISSECTION CUTINSPIRED NICOLAUS STENOS MATHEMATICAL MYOLOGY (1667)

Nuno Castel-Branco et al.

Summary: This article examines the origins of Danish anatomist Nicolaus Steno's mathematical theory of muscle motion. By rediscovering a seventeenth-century muscle atlas, the author reveals that Steno's muscle diagrams were a result of the tension he faced when combining illustrations with his mathematical insights. The article also suggests that Steno's diagrams were deeply connected to a new method of dissecting muscles and were highly correlated with current biomechanical investigations.

Is There a Correlation Between the Number of Brain Cells and IQ?

Nicharatch Songthawornpong et al.

Summary: An anatomical analysis of 50 male brains revealed that IQ does not correlate with the number of brain cells in the human neocortex and has only a weak correlation with brain weight. Other parameters related to intelligence, such as cerebral glial cells and volumes of key brain areas, also showed near-zero nonsignificant correlations with IQ.

Neuro-SPECT: On the development and function of brain emission tomography in the Copenhagen area

Anders Lassen et al.

Summary: The article discusses the advancement of SPECT technology in the Copenhagen area led by Niels A. Lassen. It explores the measurement of cerebral blood flow, the development of regional cerebral blood flow determination, and the collaborative efforts that led to the creation of the Tomomatic 64 emission tomograph. The Tomomatic 64 revolutionized dynamic data collection and imaging, resulting in numerous scientific publications and improved diagnostics for neurological disorders.

Continuing decline in the prevalence of cerebral palsy in Denmark for birth years 2008-2013

Mads Langager Larsen et al.

Summary: The study quantified and analyzed the prevalence and clinical features of cerebral palsy (CP) in Denmark for birth years 2008-2013 and found a decrease in overall prevalence to 1.73 per 1000 live births compared to the previous period. The decline was mainly observed in children with bilateral spastic and dyskinetic CP born after 37 gestational weeks, possibly influenced by national guidelines for clinical practice.

The levels of the serine protease HTRA1 in cerebrospinal fluid correlate with progression and disability in multiple sclerosis

Simone Hjaeresen et al.

Summary: This study found that levels of HTRA1 in cerebrospinal fluid significantly increased in multiple sclerosis patients, and disease modifying therapies were able to decrease these levels. ROC analysis showed that HTRA1 levels could distinguish healthy controls from MS patients, demonstrating potential biomarker value.

Post-capillary venules are the key locus for transcytosis-mediated brain delivery of therapeutic nanoparticles

Krzysztof Kucharz et al.

Summary: Limited understanding of interactions between nanoparticle drug carriers and the blood-brain barrier underlies many translational failures in treatments of brain disorders. Here the authors use two-photon microscopy in mice to characterize the receptor-mediated transcytosis of nanoparticles at all steps of delivery from the blood to the brain in vivo.

The Circadian Clock Is Sustained in the Thyroid Gland of VIP Receptor 2 Deficient Mice

Birgitte Georg et al.

Summary: The study revealed that VIP/VPAC2-receptor signaling is crucial for the regulation of the thyroid clock. In VPAC2-deficient mice, the amplitudes of clock gene expression were reduced by half, and the phases were advanced by about 5 hours compared to WT mice. Furthermore, the thyroid clock in both WT and VPAC2-deficient mice showed sustained and identical rhythms in both LD and DD, indicating a high degree of independence from the master SCN clock.
