The influences of boundary layer thickness on the characteristics of saltation sand flow-A large eddy simulation study

ShengJun Feng et al.

Summary: This paper adopts Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Lagrangian model to study wind-blown sand flow for different boundary layer thickness. The results show that the mass flux and sand transport rate increase with the increase of boundary layer thickness, along with significant fluctuations in particle velocity and sand transport rate. The spatial scales of particle structure and the time scale of statistical stability of sand transport rate also increase with delta. It takes about 10 mins to obtain reliable sand statistics in the neutral atmospheric boundary layer with a thickness of about 100-200 m.

Modulation of turbulence by saltating particles on erodible bed surface

Xiaojing Zheng et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of heavy, saltating particles on turbulence modulation in a particle-laden flow over an erodible bed through large-eddy simulation. Results show that the addition of particles reduces mean streamwise fluid velocity, dampens streamwise fluctuating velocity and enhances vertical and spanwise turbulence intensities. The modulation mechanism redistributes turbulent kinetic energy and forms 'active' roughness elements in the flow.
