Channel flow with variable geometry and Navier slip at the walls using high-order lubrication theory

Kostas D. Housiadas et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of Navier slip in the steady, laminar flow of a highly viscous and incompressible Newtonian fluid in a microfluidic channel with variable geometry is investigated. Analytical expressions in series form for the pressure drop are derived, and it is shown that slip at the walls substantially reduces the required pressure drop and facilitates fluid transport. Additionally, the higher-order terms in the asymptotic solution provide important information for the field variables and major quantities of interest in this type of internal and confined flows.

Mapping fluid structuration to flow enhancement in nanofluidic channels

Ankit Agarwal et al.

Summary: Fluid flow in miniature devices often exhibits boundary slip at the wall, contrary to the classical no-slip boundary condition. A new analytic engine has been developed that combines physics-based and data-driven modeling to quantitatively depict interfacial slip using a molecular-dynamics-trained machine learning algorithm. This approach maps system parameters to a single signature data, bridging the gap between molecular and continuum descriptions and providing a computationally inexpensive alternative to costly multi-scale or molecular simulations for resolving flow features at experimentally tractable physical scales.

Damped Oscillatory Dynamics of a Drop Impacting over Oil-Infused Slippery Interfaces-Does the Oil Viscosity Slow it Down?

Saumyadwip Bandyopadhyay et al.

Summary: A recent study has revealed the nontrivial dynamics of liquid drops impacting on soft surfaces, particularly during the later stages before settling. The relative viscosity of the liquid drop, the liquid layer, and the intrinsic wettability of the solid substrate play significant roles in governing the post-collision dynamics. Surprisingly, the viscous liquid layer can reduce viscous dissipation and accelerate the drop's final settlement.

Summary: The study models incompressible Stokes flows using an adaptive stabilized finite element method, solving a discretely stable saddle-point problem for the velocity-pressure pair approximation. It analyzes the accuracy of different discrete velocity-pressure pairs in continuous finite element spaces, and validates the framework's performance with numerical examples.

Coupling solute interactions with functionalized graphene membranes: towards facile membrane-level engineering

Vinay Arya et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the facile nanoscale engineering of ion transport through nanoporous graphene membranes by modulating the effective membrane pore size using macroscopic membrane functionalization. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the varying membrane wettability influences the structural organization of ions and water molecules in the nanopore, leading to altered permeation characteristics. The solvation characteristics of ionic species and van der Waals interactive forces also play a role in the ion-selective nature of the membrane. The relative hydrophilization of the nanoporous graphene membrane allows control over the permeation characteristics and results in ion selectivity.

Scale Effect on Simple Liquid Transport through a Nanoporous Graphene Membrane

Jaber Al Hossain et al.

Summary: The transport mechanism of a simple liquid through nanoporous graphene membranes was explored using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation. The pore diameter affects the local density peak near the membrane and the pressure drop, as well as the velocity profile inside the nanopore. By implementing different boundary approaches and local nanoscale variants, an optimized pore boundary definition was found.
